Bodycocktail - Inspire Me Again

Inspire Me Again by Bodycocktail: A New Wave Kick to the Teeth (2011) Alright, let’s get this straight—Bodycocktail’s Inspire Me Again isn’t your grandma’s chill-out record. This is a raw, unfiltered slap of electronic New Wave goodness that punches you right in the feels and leaves you wondering what just hit ya. Released back in 2011 on ZH27 Records, this album feels like it crawled out of some neon-lit basement studio in the US where Zan Hoffman clearly had one job: make something unforgettable. Spoiler alert—he nailed it. The whole thing’s got this gritty, DIY vibe but with enough polish to keep you hooked. Zan Hoffman does triple duty here as the arranger, mixer, and performer, which honestly makes sense because who else could pull off this level of chaotic genius? Tracks like “Without Geography” and “Ain’t Easy Bein Me Amigo” stick in my brain like gum under a chair—and not in a bad way. “Without Geography,” for instance, hits hard with its pulsing synths and driving beats—it’s the kind of track that grabs you by the collar and demands attention. It’s not overly complicated, but damn if it doesn’t feel like an anthem for anyone who’s ever felt lost or untethered. And then there’s “Ain’t Easy Bein Me Amigo.” What even IS that title? It’s ridiculous, sure, but the song slaps. The lyrics are kinda cryptic, almost like overhearing someone mutter complaints into their drink at a dive bar, but backed by these sharp, angular rhythms that refuse to let go. You can tell Zan was having fun messing around with sounds here; it’s playful yet pissed-off all at once. Other tracks like “Fantasy Fandango” and “Push Cart Dead Theology” round out the madness, each adding its own flavor to the mix. Some lean more experimental, others groove-heavy, but none of them phone it in. This ain’t background music—you listen to this stuff, or you miss the point entirely. Here’s the kicker though: Inspire Me Again doesn’t try to be perfect. In fact, part of its charm is how rough around the edges it feels. There’s no shiny pop sheen here, no desperate attempt to appeal to everyone. Instead, it’s deeply human, messy, and alive. Listening to it feels like catching a live show where anything could happen—and probably does. So yeah, maybe this album won’t change your life. Maybe it’ll just rattle around in your head for days until you start humming “I Hot Cha Cha Cha” while stuck in traffic. But hey, isn’t that kinda inspiring in its own weird way? Who knew a guy named Zan Hoffman could bottle up so much attitude and call it art? Final thought: If this record were a person, it’d be the guy at the party yelling about conspiracy theories while breakdancing. You don’t fully understand him, but you can’t look away either.
