French Cowboy & The One – The One Album Review Alright, buckle up, because French Cowboy & The One’s 2013 debut album The One is the kind of record that makes you want to grab a tambourine, even if you’ve never touched one in your life. Hailing from France and released via Havalina Records, this genre-bending beast straddles Alternative, Funk/Soul, and Rock with swagger. It’s like someone threw a disco ball into a garage rock rehearsal space—and it totally works. First off, let’s talk about the opening track, "Here in the Dark." This song hits you with Federico Pellegrini’s raw vocals and a drumbeat so punchy it feels like Eric Pifeteau (the man behind those drums AND backing vocals) might’ve been caffeinated when he laid it down. There’s something hypnotic about how the guitars chug along while subtle keyboard flourishes peek through like they’re shy at a party but still wanna dance. I remember this track because it’s got that perfect mix of moody and groovy—like sulking in a leather jacket under neon lights. It sticks to your brain like gum on a hot sidewalk. Then there’s "Keep Rockin’," which sounds exactly like its title: an unapologetic, high-energy banger tailor-made for sweaty basement shows or impromptu air-guitar sessions. The guitar riffs here are sharp enough to cut glass, and the drum machine adds this lo-fi charm that keeps things refreshingly scrappy. You can tell Federico wrote this one after surviving a particularly wild night; it’s chaotic but fun as hell. Plus, who doesn’t love yelling “Yell Yeah!” in their car? Not me, apparently. The production credits deserve a shout-out too. Jim Waters did the recording and mixing, and Alexis Bardinet mastered the whole thing, giving it a polished-but-not-too-polished vibe. Barbara Pissere’s artwork probably looks amazing—I mean, anything associated with this crew has gotta have style. And kudos to Eric Pifeteau for wearing multiple hats (literally—he played drums, percussion, and sang backup). That guy deserves a medal or at least a lifetime supply of baguettes. What I dig most about The One is its refusal to take itself too seriously. Sure, it’s packed with indie rock grit and disco flair, but it never tries to be cooler than you. Instead, it invites you into its weird little world where cowboys wear berets and rock out in dimly lit bars. It’s messy, heartfelt, and oddly charming—all the makings of a cult classic. So yeah, French Cowboy & The One didn’t reinvent the wheel with The One, but they sure made it spin faster and funkier. If nothing else, listening to this album will make you realize just how much better life would be if everyone had a drum machine handy. Or maybe that’s just me. Either way, crank this up and thank me later.
