Guided By Voices - Planet Score

Guided By Voices’ Planet Score – A Raw Indie Rock Punch to the Gut Alright, let’s get this straight: Planet Score isn’t here to hold your hand or whisper sweet nothings in your ear. This 2014 release from Guided By Voices is a full-on assault of gritty indie rock energy that doesn’t care if you’re ready for it. Frontman R. Pollard and co. are back at it again, throwing down tracks that feel like they were cut live in some smoky garage while the neighbors screamed complaints through the walls. It’s raw, unfiltered, and damn near perfect. Let’s talk about “Zero Elasticity” first because holy crap, this one hits hard. The opening riff grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go—no fancy tricks, just pure guitar-driven chaos with a rhythm section that feels like it might fall apart but somehow holds together. And then there’s Pollard’s voice, slurring and snarling over lyrics that make zero sense but still feel oddly profound. You don’t need to know what he’s saying; you just know it matters. That’s the magic of GBV—they don’t spell shit out for you. They trust you to keep up. Then there’s the title track, “Planet Score,” which sounds like someone took all the best parts of ’90s alt-rock and cranked them up to eleven. AJB’s lacquer cut gives the track this razor-sharp edge, making every note sting just right. There’s something hypnotic about how the melody loops around itself, pulling you deeper into its weird little world. By the time it ends, you’re left breathless, wondering what the hell just happened—and wanting more. Sure, Planet Score ain’t gonna win any Grammys (not that GBV gives a damn), but who cares? This album proves once again why Robert Pollard is basically the godfather of scrappy, lo-fi indie rock. He writes songs that stick in your brain like gum on a hot sidewalk, even when you can’t figure out why. So yeah, give this one a spin if you’re tired of polished crap streaming out of Spotify playlists. Just don’t expect perfection—expect grit, guts, and glory. Oh, and hey, fun fact: I listened to this record three times before realizing half the lyrics probably came from random notes on Pollard’s fridge. Makes me love it even more.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The album *Planet Score* by Guided By Voices is a rock gem that came out in 2014. It blends indie rock vibes with tracks like "Zero Elasticity" and the title track "Planet Score." What’s cool is that it was released across the US, UK, and Europe on two labels—Guided By Voices Inc. and Fire Records. Plus, Robert Pollard, the mastermind behind the band, wrote all the songs. One of the far finer songs from the current GbV era. Has a bit of the Kim Deal era vibe to it, actually!

First I thought that was Jimmy Pollard and Action Jackson down at Kettering Field off 75... then I realized Kettering Field is long gone.  And so is Norm Smith, for all
