Album Review: Das Lied Von Der Erde / Cosi Fan Tutte / Le Nozze Di Figaro / Don Giovanni (1991) Alright, let’s get real for a sec. This album is like throwing Mozart and Mahler into the same ring and seeing who punches harder. Spoiler alert: they both knock you out cold. Released in ’91 under Arkadia, this wild mashup of classical heavyweights Gustav Mahler and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart feels less like an album and more like a high-stakes duel between two musical gods. And guess what? You win either way. First up, we’ve got “Das Trinklied Vom Jammer Der Erde” by Mahler. Holy crap, does this track hit hard. It's not just music—it’s an emotional gut-punch wrapped in Richard Lewis’s tenor vocals that sound like he’s screaming poetry straight into your soul. The Cleveland Orchestra, led by George Szell, backs him up with layers so rich it feels like drowning in velvet. There’s something about how the strings swell and then drop off like waves crashing against rocks—chaotic but beautiful. If you don’t feel your chest tighten during this one, check your pulse because you might be dead. Then there’s “Don Giovanni”, where Mozart flips the script entirely. Forget subtlety; this is pure drama served piping hot. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf brings her soprano A-game here, delivering lines like she owns them—and honestly, she kinda does. Her voice cuts through the mix sharp enough to slice bread, while the orchestra keeps things tight and punchy. Every note drips with tension, making it impossible not to lean forward and listen closer. By the time the track ends, you’ll probably need a cigarette. Yeah, it’s that intense. Now, I gotta say, combining these two composers on one record was either genius or madness. Maybe both. On paper, Mahler’s modern, neo-romantic vibes shouldn’t mesh with Mozart’s classic elegance—but somehow, they do. Like peanut butter and sriracha, it sounds weird until you taste it. Then BAM! Your brain explodes from all the flavor combos. What sticks with me most isn’t even the big moments—it’s the little details. Like how Maureen Forrester’s contralto adds weight to every word she sings without overdoing it. Or how Antonio Scavuzzo’s engineering makes everything crystal clear without losing warmth. Even the photos by Nunzio De Martino look like they belong in a museum. Someone put serious effort into this thing. But here’s the kicker: listening to this album feels like eavesdropping on history itself. These tracks aren’t just songs—they’re stories told by people long gone but still alive in their art. And yeah, maybe that sounds cheesy, but screw it, it’s true. Final thought? Listening to this album made me realize something weird: if aliens ever invade Earth, we should blast them with Mahler and Mozart instead of nukes. Either they’d surrender immediately, or at least they’d leave thinking humans are worth preserving. Food for thought.

About Gustav Mahler, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Maureen Forrester, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Richard Lewis , Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell

Austrian composer and conductor. Born 7 July 1860 in Kalischt, Bohemia (today Kaliště, Czech Republic) and died 18 May 1911 in Vienna, Austria. Gustav Mahler (German pronunciation: ; was a late-Romantic Austrian-Bohemian composer and one of the leading conductors of his generation. As a composer, he acted as a bridge between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. While in his lifetime his status as a conductor was established beyond question, his own music gained wide popularity only after periods of relative neglect which included a ban on its performance in much of Europe during the Nazi era. After 1945 the music was discovered and championed by a new generation of listeners; Mahler then became one of the most frequently performed and recorded of all composers, a position he has sustained into the 21st century. Born in humble circumstances, Mahler showed his musical gifts at an early age. After graduating from the Vienna Conservatory in 1878, he held a succession of conducting posts of rising importance in the opera houses of Europe, culminating in his appointment in 1897 as director of the Vienna Court Opera (Hofoper). During his ten years in Vienna, Mahlerwho had converted to Catholicism from Judaism to secure the postexperienced regular opposition and hostility from the anti-Semitic press. Nevertheless, his innovative productions and insistence on the highest performance standards ensured his reputation as one of the greatest of opera conductors, particularly as an interpreter of the stage works of and . Late in his life he was briefly director of New York's and . He wed fellow composer and musician on 9 March 1902. They had two daughters, Maria Anna Mahler (03.11.1902-05.07.1907) & . Mahler's œuvre is relatively smallfor much of his life composing was a part-time activity, secondary to conductingand is confined to the genres of symphony and song, except for one piano quartet. Most of his ten symphonies are very large-scale works, several of which employ soloists and choirs in addition to augmented orchestral forces. These works were often controversial when first performed, and were slow to receive critical and popular approval; an exception was the triumphant premiere of his Eighth Symphony in 1910. Mahler's immediate musical successors were the composers of the Second Viennese School, notably , and . and are among later 20th-century composers who admired and were influenced by Mahler. The International Gustav Mahler Institute was established in 1955, to honour the composer's life and work.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s an interesting fact: This album is like a musical mashup of two legendary composers—Gustav Mahler and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It combines Mahler’s *Das Lied Von Der Erde*, a deeply emotional song cycle about life and nature, with famous arias from Mozart’s operas *Don Giovanni*, *Cosi Fan Tutte*, and *Le Nozze Di Figaro*. The result? A unique blend of modern, classical, and neo-romantic styles that bridges centuries of music history. What makes it even cooler is the lineup of talent involved—legendary conductor George Szell, powerhouse vocalists Maureen Forrester, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Richard Lewis, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Oh, and fun detail—it was released in Italy in 1991 under the label Arkadia, making it feel like a hidden gem for classical music lovers.
