Review by Jaime Fernández del Río

Alright, let’s dive into this wild ride of an album—Mercedes Benz / Piece Of My Heart by Janis Joplin and Big Brother & The Holding Company. Released back in ’72 (yeah, the Swedes got it first via CBS), this one’s a raw mix of blues and rock that feels like a punch to the gut—in the best way possible. First off, "Piece Of My Heart." Man, this track hits hard. It’s like Janis is standing right in front of you, pouring out her soul with every raspy scream and growl. You can’t help but feel it—like she’s lived through every ounce of pain in those lyrics. The band’s groovy backing just amps up the intensity, making it impossible not to crank the volume. Honestly, if this song doesn’t give you goosebumps, check your pulse or something. Then there’s “Mercedes Benz.” This one’s totally different—it’s stripped-down, almost playful, but still dripping with attitude. Just Janis and her voice, no big production, no fuss. She’s basically mocking materialism while also kinda-sorta wanting that fancy car herself. It’s short, sharp, and sticks in your head for days. Plus, how many songs make you laugh and think at the same time? Not many. What makes this album stick with me isn’t just the music—it’s Janis herself. She wasn’t trying to fit some mold; she was unapologetically her, flaws and all. And yeah, sure, the recording quality might not be perfect, but that’s part of its charm. Feels real, you know? So here’s the kicker: listening to this record today, it’s kinda crazy how timeless it feels. Like, swap out the Mercedes for a Tesla, and these tunes could still slide right into 2023 without missing a beat. Guess some things never change—people still want love, freedom, and maybe a sweet ride to go with it. Who knew heartbreak and car envy could sound so damn good together?

In August 1966, the group signed with and recorded an album. However, it was not released until a year later and in the meantime, with very little reward, they moved with the to a house in Lagunitas, California. It was there that Joplin relapsed into hard drug use. Joplin and the band signed with in November 1967 and released in 1968. This release was the culmination of a year in which Joplin had wowed audiences at the Monterey Pop Festival, the Anderson Theater in New York, the Wake For Martin Luther King Jr concert with in New York and on TV's prime-time Dick Cavett Show. Joplin then left the band after a Family Dog benefit gig in December 1968 and formed a back-up group, the , releasing an album in September 1969. The group disbanded three months later, with Joplin again suffering from her addictions. After taking time out in Brazil with close friend Linda Gravenites (wife of Bay Area musician from 1962-1970), who was her costume designer and praised by Joplin in the May 1968 issue of Vogue, Joplin returned to America and formed the , which began touring in May 1970. She also appeared in reunion concerts with at this time. She then began recording a new album in September 1970 with producer . By Saturday, October 3rd Joplin had already laid down a number of takes at in LA, including "Mercedes Benz". On the following day she failed to appear and John Cooke, the road manager of Full Tilt Boogie Band, drove to the Landmark Motor Hotel where Joplin was staying. There he found her dead on the floor of her room, the result of a seizure caused by a heroin overdose. Joplin was cremated and her ashes scattered from a plane into the Pacific Ocean. Her unfinished recordings were assembled and the result was the posthumously released in 1971. It became the biggest selling album of her career. Inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 (Performer).
