Review by Bart Martens

Alright, let’s talk about Movie Star New Champion by Keeling Beckford Patrick Cool. This album sneaks up on you like a summer breeze—warm but with just enough edge to keep things interesting. It's pure reggae vibes, leaning into lovers rock and dancehall styles, and honestly? It feels like home. Like, you don’t even need to be from the US to get it; this is universal stuff. First off, “Movie Star.” Oh man, that track hits different. The melody rolls in smooth, almost like honey dripping slow over toast. You can feel the swagger in Keeling’s voice—he’s not just singing; he’s storytelling. He talks about chasing dreams, shining bright, all while keeping it real. I kept replaying this one because it felt like my own little pep talk. Something about how he blends confidence with vulnerability makes it stick in your head long after the song ends. Plus, the beat? Chef’s kiss. Perfect for vibing solo or turning up at a backyard party. Then there’s “New Champion.” Now, THIS one slaps. From the first note, it grabs you by the soul and doesn’t let go. There’s this raw energy in the rhythm, kinda like when you’re running late but still manage to catch the bus—it’s chaotic, yeah, but also triumphant. Lyrically, it’s got layers. Like, sure, it sounds celebratory, but if you really listen, it’s deeper than that. It’s about rising above, proving doubters wrong, and owning your lane. By the second verse, I was ready to take on the world (or at least finish my laundry). What I love most about this album is how unapologetically KEELING it is. No gimmicks, no trying too hard to fit some mold. It’s straight-up authentic, like catching up with an old friend who tells it like it is. And props to his label—also named Keeling—for letting him stay true to himself. That’s rare these days. Here’s the thing though: listening to Movie Star New Champion made me realize something kinda wild. Reggae isn’t just music; it’s therapy. Like, who knew two tracks could make you wanna dream bigger AND groove harder? Maybe that’s why we keep coming back to artists like Keeling—they remind us of what matters. Oh, and random thought: If this album were a person, it’d probably smell like sunscreen and coconut water. Just saying.
