Nedry - Condors

Condors by Nedry: A Sonic Journey That Sticks With You If you’re into albums that feel like a fever dream but also kinda make sense, Condors by Nedry is your jam. Released in 2010 on On The Shelf Records and Monotreme Records (props to those labels for taking a chance), this UK-born masterpiece blends genres so effortlessly it’s almost unfair. Electronic, rock, alternative—you name it, they’ve got it. But what really sets Condors apart is how it dances between ethereal soundscapes and gritty beats without ever losing its soul. Let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck with me long after the first listen. First up, “Where The Dead Birds Go.” Man, this song hits different. It starts off all moody and atmospheric, like walking through fog at dawn. Ayu Okakita’s vocals are haunting—like she’s whispering secrets only you can hear. Then BAM! The beat drops, and suddenly you’re not just listening anymore; you’re living inside the music. There’s something raw and real here, as if the band ripped open their chests and let us peek inside. I don’t know how else to describe it—it’s beautiful, weird, and kinda heartbreaking all at once. Then there’s “Apples & Pears,” which feels like a completely different animal. This one leans more into indie-electronic vibes, with synths swirling around like candy floss at a carnival. Matt Parker and Chris Amblin clearly had fun messing around with textures here because every layer adds another dimension. What gets me most is how catchy yet unpredictable it is. Just when you think you’ve figured out where it’s going, it pulls a 180 and takes you somewhere new. It’s playful but still packed with emotion, like laughing till you cry or dancing till your feet hurt. The whole album has this DIY charm thanks to the trio behind it—Ayu, Chris, and Matt wearing pretty much every hat from writing to producing. And shoutout to Mark Gamble for the artwork too, ‘cause the visuals match the vibe perfectly. The mix of styles—IDM, synth-pop, dubstep—is wild enough to keep things interesting but cohesive enough to avoid chaos. Honestly? It’s hard to believe this came out over a decade ago because it still sounds fresh today. Reflecting on Condors, I realize it’s less of an album and more of an experience. Like, have you ever gone hiking and stumbled across a hidden valley? That’s what listening to this feels like. Unexpected beauty wrapped in mystery. Oh, and here’s a random thought: if aliens landed tomorrow and asked me to explain human creativity, I’d hand them a copy of Condors. Because sometimes, art doesn’t need words—it just needs heart.
