Psychotic Youth - Alive Under The Midnight Sun

Review by Benjamin Ugoji

Alive Under The Midnight Sun: Punk Rock That Kicks You in the Teeth Psychotic Youth’s Alive Under The Midnight Sun isn’t just another punk rock album—it’s a punch to the gut, a middle finger to mediocrity, and one hell of a wild ride. Released in 2005 via Target Earth Records (outta Japan, no less), this sucker screams raw energy from start to finish. With Jorgen Westman handling most of the songwriting and Hirocky T. Wimpy dropping some liner notes for flavor, it’s clear these guys weren’t messing around when they hit record. Let’s cut to the chase—this ain’t your polished, overproduced garbage. It’s gritty, loud, and unapologetically pissed off. Two tracks stand out like sore thumbs: “Cindy I-II” and “Hot Rod Girl.” “Cindy I-II” hits you like a freight train with its relentless riffs and snarling vocals. The lyrics are sharp enough to slice through steel, telling a story that feels equal parts sleazy and desperate. You can practically smell the cheap booze and bad decisions oozing outta this track. It sticks in your brain like gum on a hot sidewalk—you hate it at first, but then you realize you kinda love it. Then there’s “Hot Rod Girl,” which is basically an anthem for anyone who’s ever revved an engine or flipped off authority figures. This tune doesn’t mess around—it grabs you by the collar and drags you along for the ride. The chorus slams into you harder than a runaway shopping cart, and before you know it, you’re singing along like a lunatic. It’s fast, furious, and damn near impossible not to headbang to. The rest of the album keeps up the pace, with bangers like “Surrender,” “Nice Girls,” and “Goldie Hawn” keeping the adrenaline pumping. Even slower moments like “Good Times Are Gone” pack an emotional punch that’ll leave you reeling. And let’s not forget “Stereo,” which wraps things up with a chaotic flourish that feels like throwing a brick through a window—messy, satisfying, and oddly beautiful. What makes Alive Under The Midnight Sun so unforgettable is how unfiltered it feels. Psychotic Youth didn’t try to reinvent the wheel—they just made sure their version had spikes on it. Listening to this album is like getting into a bar fight—you walk away bruised, breathless, and maybe missing a tooth, but holy crap, was it worth it. So here’s the kicker: if you think punk’s dead, spin this record and prepare to eat your words. Or better yet, crank it up loud enough to piss off your neighbors. Because sometimes, all you need is a little chaos to remind you you’re alive.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *Alive Under The Midnight Sun* by Psychotic Youth is a hidden gem in the punk rock scene. Released in 2005 in Japan, it blends raw energy with catchy hooks. What’s wild is that most of the tracks were written by Jorgen Westman, but Hirocky T. Wimpy added his touch with liner notes. It’s like a mixtape of rebellious vibes, featuring songs like "Hot Rod Girl" and "Goldie Hawn." Kinda funny how an album with such a midnight-themed title feels more like a high-energy ride.

Awesome! Jag minns att jag hörde den här i P3 sent '93 - tidigt '94, och radioprataren efteråt kommenterade att det borde vara "P3" i stället för "MTV". ^_^

So last weekend I was skipping through those old "Ox" (German punkrock fanzine) compilations, when I re-discovered this song, one of my favourites from the past - and I was hooked on it all weekend long. Let's check out some more stuff from this obviously great band...
