Where The Boys Are Hot Nights: A Forgotten Gem That Still Kicks Ass Alright, let’s talk about Where The Boys Are Hot Nights by Lisa Hartman and Jude Cole. Yeah, you heard me right—this 1984 joint venture into pop rock territory is like that one cousin at family reunions who shows up uninvited but ends up stealing the show. Released under RCA in the UK, US, and Japan, this album doesn’t just sit there collecting dust; it punches its way through genres like Stage & Screen and straight-up Rock with enough sass to make your headphones blush. Let’s dive into two tracks that slap hard: “Where The Boys Are” and “Hot Nights.” First off, “Where The Boys Are.” This track hits different. It’s got this theme-y vibe (duh, it’s part of the style) that feels like someone threw an ‘80s prom night and a summer blockbuster movie into a blender. The energy? Electric. The lyrics? Sticky as gum on a hot sidewalk. You can almost picture Lisa strutting down some neon-lit street while Jude chills in the background looking cool as hell. Brad Gilderman on mixing duties deserves a shoutout here—he didn’t mess around. Every beat slams into place like pieces of a puzzle you didn’t know were missing. Then there’s “Hot Nights,” which is basically what happens when you pour gasoline on nostalgia and light a match. Denis Pregnolato producing this beast was no accident—it’s sleek, polished, yet raw enough to remind you why rock used to mean something before autotune took over. The guitar riffs are sharp enough to cut glass, and the vocals have this gritty edge that makes you wanna grab your leather jacket and rebel against… well, whatever authority figure pissed you off last week. Why do these tracks stick? Because they don’t try too hard to be perfect. They’re messy, loud, imperfect—and that’s exactly why they work. In a world full of manufactured hits designed for TikTok dances, this album reminds us what real music sounds like. No frills, no gimmicks, just pure adrenaline wrapped in vinyl. So yeah, maybe Where The Boys Are Hot Nights isn’t gonna win any Grammys nowadays, but screw that noise. This thing has soul. And honestly? I’d take one spin of this record over ten listens of whatever flavorless crap dominates the charts today. Oh, and fun fact: if aliens ever invade Earth, I’m playing this album during negotiations. Bet my money they’ll leave after hearing “Hot Nights.” Peace out.

I feel this version is more powerful than the original but the passion of the song is equal

Cheezy but ok summer 80s flick. Even though it’s four 30 year olds pretending to be in college chasing a gay dude. But great cover by Lisa Hartman

The film marketed itself as updated nostalgia like GREASE but where GREASE had the soul of a 1959 drive-in teen comedy updated for 1978 audiences, WHERE THE BOYS ARE 84 had the soul of a 1984 teen sex comedy. Not that teen sex comedies weren't highly popular at the time, but this wasn't raunchy enough for that audience yet too raunchy for other audiences. Much depends on your opinion of "Hot Bod" contests that range from a hot dance by surprisingly sexy Lorna Luft to topless bikini babes.

@movieluver81 Thanks for the info. I was recently looking around on Amazon, and noticed that Where the Boys Are '84 is finally going to be released on DVD around August 23, 2011. I know that the movie isn't Oscar-worthy; but it's one of my guilty pleasures along with other early 80's beach flicks like: Spring Break, Hardbodies, and Fraternity Vacation (even though it's set in Palm Springs).

@movieluver81 Your welcome. The Alternative Distribution Alliance studio is releasing Where The Boys Are '84 on DVD on Tuesday, 08/23/2011. This studio is responsible for digging through movie vaults for films that "time and other studios" seem to have forgotten. It's good to know that I'm not alone in liking this gem of a "guilty pleasure".

@movieluver81 Got my copy about the same time that you did...LOL!! As I previously stated, it's a "guilty pleasure" movie of mine. I also enjoyed Wendy and Russell's interviews on the DVD...it was great to see them after all these years. As soon as "Hot Nights" (the opening number) got cranking, I was instantly transported back to the early 80's. It brought back memories of the other (then) raunchy 80's beach/college flicks..."Spring Break

Good movie although the original was a classic. I recall the days years ago of going to Florida on college spring breaks. Ft. Lauderdale was really swinging in those days.

Granted, Connie Francis' version is STILL the original best; BUT, I've looked for this version for a long time. Lisa Hartman's 80's version of this classic is a welcomed pleasure to hear. And the sax at the end gives this version a sexy, yet romantic edge to it. Thanks for the post yoann1978.
