Album Review: First Time Ever Louie Louie Remix by Joanna Law If you’re into dreamy electronic vibes with a dash of house and ambient magic, Joanna Law’s First Time Ever Louie Louie Remix is one worth checking out. Released in 1990 via City Beat and Beggars Banquet (a pretty solid combo if you ask me), this UK gem brings some serious chill-out moments while keeping your feet tapping. It’s got that late-night vibe—perfect for when you wanna unwind but still feel alive. Let’s talk tracks. The standout for me has to be "First Time Ever (Louie Louie Remix)." This version takes the original tune and gives it a fresh coat of paint, blending Ewan MacColl's heartfelt lyrics with a groovy bassline courtesy of Steve Barnacle. The saxophone bits from Gary Barnacle sneak in like an old friend showing up at just the right moment. You can tell they didn’t rush this remix; it feels layered, thoughtful, and kinda hypnotic. Every time I hear it, I’m pulled back to those hazy evenings where everything slows down but somehow stays exciting. Another banger on here? For sure, "First Time Ever (Mellow Groove Dub)." This one leans way more into the ambient side of things. It strips away most of the vocals, letting Simon A. Law’s piano work shine through alongside some smooth programming tricks. It’s almost meditative—you could zone out or crank it during yoga without breaking a sweat. But don’t let its mellow nature fool ya; there’s still enough depth to keep you hooked. There’s something comforting about how it flows, like sinking into your favorite chair after a long day. The whole album is packed with talent—James Taylor adds some organ flair on track B2, and The Funky Ginger nails the production across the board. Even Lee Hamblin’s engineering deserves a shoutout because these mixes are crystal clear. And props to Christopher Law for whatever mysterious “other” contributions he made—I love when credits leave a little mystery behind. What really sticks with me about this record isn’t just the music—it’s how timeless it feels. Sure, it came out in 1990, but listening today doesn’t feel dated at all. Maybe it’s the mix of genres or the care put into each track, but it’s got that rare quality of sounding both nostalgic and new. Random thought though—if Gary Barnacle ever decided to start a flute-and-sax duo project, I’d absolutely listen. Dude knows his stuff. So yeah, give First Time Ever Louie Louie Remix a spin. Whether you’re vibing solo or need background tunes for a low-key hang, Joanna Law’s got your back.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *First Time Ever Louie Louie Remix* by Joanna Law blends electronic house and ambient vibes, but its roots trace back to a classic folk song. The track is originally based on "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," written by Ewan MacColl in 1957. Fast forward to 1990, and it got a funky UK makeover with remixes like the "Louie Louie Remix" and "Mellow Groove Dub." Fun fact—Gary Barnacle, who played sax and flute, teamed up with Steve Barnacle (bass and programming) to give it that extra groove. It’s wild how one song can evolve across genres and decades!

Got here from Way Out West - The Gift.
Sad thing is, youtube doesn't have the orange-filtered version of the video I originally saw on "MTV AMP".

Awesome song and version. She's not how i expected her to look. Been listening to it in a mix since 1990 thanks to Mastermix BPM Part 2 the second generation, excellent megamix with lots of great songs like this, timmy thomas, danny madden, innocence etc

Not an easy song to cover, but hat's of to British singer Joanna Law who doesa sterling job of this Roberta Flack classic from 1972, and what a beautiful voice too she posseses, Joanna the sister of Simon Law, really makes this song her own with a more upbeat interpretation
