Album Review: OG by Mädness – A Boom Bap Love Letter from Germany Alright, let’s get into it. OG by Mädness dropped in 2019, and if you’re a fan of raw Hip Hop with that conscious edge, this is the kind of project that’ll sit heavy in your soul. It’s not perfect—what is?—but it’s real. Like, this-is-who-I-am-and-you-can-take-it-or-leave-it real. And honestly? I’m here for it. The album swings between hard-hitting bangers and introspective joints, all stitched together with tight production and those classic Boom Bap drums (shoutout to Philipp Kullen). You feel the German roots loud and clear, but there’s something universal about the way Mädness spits his truth. Two tracks stuck out to me like crazy: “Kein Ort” and “Was soll ich dir schon erzählen?” Let me break ‘em down. “Kein Ort,” especially the version featuring Marteria, hits different. There’s just something about how Mädness lays it bare over haunting beats—it feels like he’s staring right at you, telling you things he probably shouldn’t. The lyrics are sharp, almost cutting, but they don’t come off as preachy. More like… someone venting late-night thoughts after one too many coffees. When Marteria jumps in, it adds another layer of grit and melody, pulling you deeper into the vibe. This track stays on repeat because it doesn’t just make you nod your head; it makes you think. V.Raeter’s illustrations add a touch of personality, making the whole thing feel cohesive. And Alexa Voss, Mehira Cruz, Ipp Halver—they brought extra flavor to the vocals where needed, rounding out the experience. If I had to nitpick, some tracks blend together after a while. Not saying they’re forgettable, but OG demands attention. You gotta sit with it, let it breathe. That’s not a flaw though—it’s more like a feature. This isn’t background music; it’s front-and-center art. Here’s the kicker: listening to OG feels like running into an old friend who’s been through some stuff since you last saw them. They’ve grown, maybe struggled, definitely changed—but deep down, they’re still the same person. And somehow, that makes you reflect on your own journey. So yeah, OG by Mädness isn’t gonna change the world, but it might change your day—or at least your playlist.
