Pat Benatar - Shadows Of The Night

Review by Ирина Присакарь

Shadows of the Night: A Timeless Blast from Pat Benatar Let’s talk about Shadows of the Night, Pat Benatar’s 1982 gem. This album isn’t just another collection of songs—it’s a vibe, a mood, an electric punch to your chest that screams early '80s rock glory. With genres spanning Pop, Rock, and Electronic, and styles dipping into Hard Rock, Arena Rock, Synth-pop, and even Soft Rock, it's like this record can’t decide what it wants to be… but in the best way possible. The production team—Neil Geraldo (who also happens to be her hubby) and Peter Coleman—really brought their A-game here. And let’s not forget P. Mannucci on mastering and NOEL for lacquer cutting duties; they made sure every track hits hard without losing its soul. Chrysalis Records put this baby out across the globe—from the US to Japan, Europe to New Zealand—and honestly? It deserved all the love it got. Now, onto the tracks. There are some real bangers here, but two stand out for me personally: “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and “Shadows of the Night.” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” is one of those songs where you instantly feel invincible when it comes on. That opening riff? Pure adrenaline. I remember blasting this in my car once during a road trip with friends. We were singing so loud we probably sounded like dying cats, but who cares? It was perfect. The energy is raw, unapologetic, and totally empowering. You don’t just listen to this song—you live it. Then there’s the title track, “Shadows of the Night.” Oh man, this one hits different. It starts off moody, almost haunting, then explodes into this epic anthem full of grit and drama. It feels cinematic, like something straight outta an '80s action movie montage. Listening to it always makes me think about late-night drives under streetlights, feeling both lost and unstoppable at the same time. Plus, having both the edited and full versions on the album gives you options depending on how much emotional chaos you’re ready for. What’s wild is how well these tracks hold up today. Sure, the synth sounds might scream '80s nostalgia, but the heart behind them still resonates. Pat’s voice cuts through everything else like a knife—it’s powerful yet vulnerable, fierce yet relatable. She wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel; she was just being herself, and somehow that made magic. Thinking back on Shadows of the Night, it strikes me how rare albums like this are now. Back then, music felt bigger, louder, more alive. Maybe it’s because people actually held physical copies of records instead of streaming playlists curated by algorithms. Or maybe it’s because artists poured their guts into their work instead of chasing trends. Whatever it is, this album reminds us what rock ‘n’ roll used to mean—and maybe what it could mean again. So yeah, if you haven’t spun this record lately—or ever—do yourself a favor and give it a shot. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself air-guitaring in your living room or randomly belting lyrics while grocery shopping.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: Pat Benatar's *Shadows of the Night* album, released in 1982, was a global hit spanning continents from the US to Japan. What’s wild is that it blended so many styles—hard rock, synth-pop, and even soft rock—that it felt like a musical chameleon. The track "Shadows of the Night" became iconic, but fun tidbit—it was actually an edited version on the album. Oh, and get this: Neil Geraldo, Pat’s guitarist and producer, helped shape the sound that made it unforgettable. Rock history at its finest!

Did anyone recognize a young Bill Paxton operating the Nazi radio? Of course there was Judge Reinhold in the beginning as well. Good times, good music!........
