Review by Chad R. MacDonald

Mačke Vole Grebati by Maxmett: A Raw Slice of Croatian Rock Magic Let’s get real for a second—how often do you stumble across an album that feels like it was made just for those moments when life gets too heavy? That’s exactly what Mačke Vole Grebati is. Released in 1993, this hard rock/heavy metal gem from Croatia hits hard, not just with its riffs but with its soul. It’s messy, raw, and unapologetically human, kinda like your favorite pair of beat-up jeans. The band’s lineup reads like some kind of rebel dream team: Tina on vocals bringing fire, Katarina shredding the guitar like nobody’s business, Nela holding down the basslines, Diana smashing the drums, and Meri sprinkling synth magic all over the place. And let’s not forget Igor CC Kelčec—he didn’t just slap together the cover art; his photography gives the whole thing this gritty vibe that screams “we’re here to stay.” Now, onto the tracks. There are ten songs on the album, but two stuck to me like gum under a table. First up, there’s “Pao Je Snijeg”. This one’s hauntingly beautiful, man. The melody wraps around you like a cold winter breeze, and Tina’s voice cuts through it all like a knife. You can almost picture yourself standing alone in the snow at 3 AM, questioning every decision you’ve ever made. It’s melancholic as hell, but isn’t that what makes it so good? Sometimes sadness sounds better than happiness ever could. Then there’s “Mačke Vole Grebati,” the title track. Oh boy. If you love cats (and who doesn’t?), this song will make you wanna adopt ten more. But don’t let the playful name fool you—it’s got teeth. The guitars roar, the rhythm punches you right in the chest, and the chorus sticks in your head like bubblegum. It’s fun, sure, but also kinda wild. Like watching a kitten turn into a lion mid-song. What really ties everything together is Gvido Mineo’s production work. He didn’t polish this album till it sparkled—he left the rough edges where they belonged, giving it character. You can hear the sweat, the energy, the sheer effort poured into each note. It’s refreshing, honestly. Most modern stuff feels like it came out of a factory line, sterile and perfect. Not this. Nope. This is alive. Here’s the kicker though—this album came out in 1993. Think about that. Croatia was going through some serious changes back then, and yet these guys were cranking out music that felt both personal and universal. It’s like they took all the chaos and turned it into something people could scream along to. Or cry to. Or both. So yeah, Mačke Vole Grebati might not be flawless, but maybe that’s why I keep coming back to it. Life ain’t flawless either, right? And hey, if nothing else, listening to this record reminds me that sometimes, even cats need a little scratching behind the ears. Who knew?

Slušam ove cure i kako tako.
Pjevanje tako-tako, no nešto mi
s glazbom ne ide u uho (imam
odličan sluh). Nešto me kopka,
no ne mogu nikako naći uzrok.
Puštam glazbu ponovo, ali ne,
ne dolazi mi nikako suvislo
riješenje, a i dalje netko ili
nešto "felša". I onda........cvrc
upalila mi se lampica i sve je
postalo jasnije......Katarina Peović
je toliko grda, da žice gitare
koju je svirala, to osjete pa
nemaju dobru i potpunu vibraciju.
Zato je cijela pjesma bila falš.

Odlična obrada i zvuči bolje od originala.
Nešto slično je napravio Štulić (AZRA "Jesi li sama večeras").
