Mike Oldfield - Campanas Tubulares

Campanas Tubulares by Mike Oldfield: A Wild Ride Through Sonic Chaos Alright, let’s get real for a second. Campanas Tubulares—yeah, that’s Spanish for Tubular Bells, in case you didn’t know—is one of those albums that hits you like a freight train full of weird vibes and unexpected twists. Released back in ‘86 under Virgin Records, this thing is a genre-bending freakshow blending prog rock, folk rock, classic rock, modern classical… hell, maybe even some alien transmissions snuck in there too. And it’s not just music; it’s an experience, man. First off, props to Trevor Key for the design and photography because the cover art looks like something out of a fever dream. It sets the tone perfectly for what’s about to slap you across the face when you hit play. Now, sure, technically this is a re-release of sorts since these tracks are from Tubular Bells, but screw it—it feels fresh, raw, and aggressive as hell. Let’s dive into the meat of it. Track 1, "Campanas Tubulares (Lado 1)", kicks things off with this eerie, creeping vibe. The opening notes feel like someone sneaking up on you with a knife made of soundwaves. You can practically hear Oldfield sweating over his instruments, weaving layers upon layers of madness together. By the time the percussion kicks in, you’re either hooked or confused as hell—but either way, you’re still listening. This track sticks with me because it doesn’t give two shits whether you “get it” or not. It just exists, bold and unapologetic, daring you to keep up. Then there’s "Campanas Tubulares = Tubular Bells (Lado 2)". Holy crap, this one goes hard. If Side 1 was the calm before the storm, Side 2 is the tornado ripping through town. The build-up is insane, layering guitars, synths, and who-knows-what-else until your brain starts melting out of your ears. There’s this moment near the middle where everything drops out except for this haunting piano line, and damn if it doesn’t send chills down your spine. Oldfield wasn’t messing around here—he crafted something that feels alive, like it could leap out of the speakers and start running wild. Now, credit where it’s due: Mike Oldfield, along with tech wizards Simon Heyworth and Tom Newman, pulled off some next-level wizardry here. They made every note count, every beat matter, and every second unpredictable. Argentina might’ve been the release country, but this album doesn’t belong to any one place—it belongs wherever people crave chaos wrapped in beauty. Here’s the kicker though: after blasting through all four tracks (which, yeah, are basically variations of Tubular Bells), you realize something kinda funny. For all its complexity and brilliance, Campanas Tubulares feels like a love letter to experimentation itself. Like, Oldfield looked at the rulebook, laughed, and threw it out the window. And honestly? That’s why it works. So yeah, go listen to this beast of an album. Just don’t blame me if it messes with your head.

In order to keep the video online I had to let the copyright advertise, without that there is no video and if it bothers you, use adblocks or buy the cd.

I learned to love music from my dad playing the piano. I played him Tubular Bells. His father a mailman bought a Monarch Baldwin in 1920 when Pop was 5. I still have that 103 year old piano we all learned on. Amazing tone quality.
