Album Review: I Studio 1980-1982 by Norgez Bank Norgez Bank’s I Studio 1980-1982 is a raw, unfiltered time capsule of Norwegian rock from its early days. Released in 1998 on the No Noise label, this compilation pulls together tracks recorded between 1980 and 1982, blending classic rock grit with punk attitude and new wave experimentation. It’s not perfect—some songs feel rough around the edges—but that’s exactly what makes it so compelling. This album doesn’t try to impress you with shiny production; instead, it hits hard with authenticity. One standout track is “Tromsø Brenn.” The energy here is infectious, driven by jagged guitar riffs and a vocal delivery that feels like someone shouting over chaos. You can almost picture smoky underground clubs packed with people losing their minds to this tune back in the day. What sticks with me most is how chaotic yet controlled it feels—like they’re teetering on the edge but never quite falling off. It’s the kind of song that grabs your attention and refuses to let go. Another track worth mentioning is “Berlin.” Slower and moodier than some of the others, it has this haunting quality that sneaks up on you. The lyrics are sparse but evocative, painting an image of cold streets and darker emotions. There’s something about the way the bassline groans beneath everything else—it’s almost hypnotic. If “Tromsø Brenn” is the wild party, then “Berlin” is the quiet after-hours reflection. Together, these two tracks show just how versatile Norgez Bank could be. The rest of the album follows suit, mixing high-energy bangers like “Just A Little Teardrop” with more experimental pieces like “Springtime In Belsen.” Some tracks hit harder than others, sure, but there’s a charm in hearing a band figure things out as they go along. Styles bounce between punk fury, new wave quirks, and classic rock swagger without ever settling into one for too long. What really struck me while listening was how alive this record feels. These aren’t polished studio creations—they’re snapshots of a band doing what they love, flaws and all. And honestly? That’s refreshing. Too much modern music tries too hard to be perfect, losing the human element in the process. In the end, I Studio 1980-1982 isn’t just an album—it’s a glimpse into a specific moment in Norway’s musical history. Listening to it feels like flipping through old Polaroids or finding a dusty cassette tape at a thrift store. Sure, it might not change your life, but it’ll make you smile (or maybe even headbang). Oddly enough, my favorite part wasn’t any single song—it was realizing halfway through that I’d started tapping my foot without even noticing. Sometimes, music doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel to leave an impression.
