Paul De Marinis - Music As A Second Language

Exploring the Sonic Wonderland of Paul De Marinis’ Music As A Second Language If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if a synthesizer went to therapy and then wrote poetry about its feelings, well, Paul De Marinis’ Music As A Second Language might just be your jam. Released in 1969 on Lovely Music, Ltd., this album is a wild ride through New Age vibes, experimental electronic bleeps, and even some classical undertones that feel like they wandered in from another dimension. And yeah, it’s all done by one guy—Paul himself—who not only composed but also wrangled the synths into submission. Let’s dive into two tracks that stuck with me because, honestly, how could they not? First up, “Music as a Second Language~Beneath the Numbered Sky.” This one feels like floating in a spaceship made of glass while someone whispers math equations in your ear. It starts off soft and dreamy, like clouds deciding whether or not to rain, but then BAM—it hits you with these glitchy little bursts of noise that make you sit up straighter. You’re not sure if you should dance or meditate, so you kinda do both at the same time (awkward, but worth it). The way Paul layers sounds here is ridiculous—in the best way possible. It’s like he’s speaking directly to your brain in a language you don’t fully understand but somehow get anyway. Then there’s “The Power Of Suggestion,” which is basically the musical equivalent of walking into a room and forgetting why you came in. At first, it lulls you with these hypnotic tones, almost like wind chimes being tickled by ghosts. But before you can get too cozy, things start shifting unpredictably—a bass drone sneaks in, some high-pitched squeaks pop out of nowhere, and suddenly you’re questioning reality itself. I kept coming back to this track because it’s disorienting without being annoying, if that makes sense. Like, it messes with your head, but in a good friend kind of way. What’s wild about this whole album is how timeless it feels. Even though it dropped in ’69, it doesn’t scream “vintage” or “retro.” Instead, it’s this weirdly futuristic thing that still sounds fresh today. Maybe that’s because Paul wasn’t trying to fit into any box—he just let his imagination run wild and hit record. So yeah, Music As A Second Language isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking for catchy hooks or lyrics to sing along to, you’ll probably bounce after the first minute. But if you’re into music that challenges you, makes you tilt your head like a confused puppy, and occasionally gives you goosebumps for no reason, this one’s worth checking out. Oh, and here’s something random: listening to this album made me realize my microwave probably has more personality than half the playlists on Spotify. Food for thought.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: Paul De Marinis' album *Music As A Second Language* is a wild mix of New Age and Electronic sounds, but it came out way back in 1969. Yeah, that’s right—decades before most people had even heard of electronic music. He didn’t just compose it; he also played the synthesizer himself. The album feels like a journey through experimental soundscapes, blending classical influences with futuristic vibes. One track, *"Leçon par l'aiguille,"* even hints at language lessons, tying into the quirky concept of "music as a second language." It’s like a time capsule from another era, but still ahead of its time.

Paul Demarinis needs more love. This honestly feels like an early Vektroid or OPN release, but ACTUALLY made in the early 90s.

Also I've emailed the dude, and he replied. He's a good man. Just...don't flood him with a ton of random emails, okay? Dude doesn't deserve the shit YouTubers go through. :P

Found this through KCRW's Eclectic stream, riveting and distinctive. Thank you for uploading. De Marinis now teaches art at Stanford, clearly a polymath!
