Brenda Holloway - The Very Best Of

Review by Vaishnav SR

The Very Best Of Brenda Holloway: A Soulful Time Machine That’ll Knock Your Socks Off Let’s get one thing straight—Brenda Holloway is no stranger to soul. Her 1999 compilation The Very Best Of isn’t just another throwback; it’s like finding an old mixtape in your attic and realizing it’s gold. With its roots firmly planted in funk, soul, and R&B vibes, this album feels less like a "best of" and more like a warm hug from Motown itself. Hats off to Harry Weinger (the compilation producer) for pulling this gem together. Now, let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck with me harder than gum on a summer sidewalk: “Every Little Bit Hurts” and “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy.” First up, “Every Little Bit Hurts.” If heartbreak had a soundtrack, this would be it. The way Holloway belts out those lyrics? It’s raw, real, and kinda makes you wanna grab a tub of ice cream while staring dramatically out a rain-streaked window. But here’s the kicker—it doesn’t wallow too long. There’s this subtle bounce in the rhythm that keeps it groovy enough to dance through your tears. By the time she hits the chorus, you’re not sad anymore—you’re empowered. Like, “Yeah, love stinks, but at least I’ve got great taste in music!” Then there’s “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy.” Oh man, where do I even start? This track flips the script entirely. Where “Every Little Bit Hurts” tugs at your broken heartstrings, this one throws glitter all over them. It’s pure sunshine bottled into three minutes and change. Holloway’s voice soars effortlessly, making you believe—for a brief moment—that happiness might actually exist. Spoiler alert: It does, especially if you’re listening to this song. Credit also goes to Kevin Reeves for remastering these tunes without stripping away their vintage charm. And props to Georgia Ward and Elisha Ukwuoma for keeping things running smoother than a freshly buttered biscuit. Even Brenda herself chimes in with some liner notes, which adds a nice personal touch. But here’s the twist—this album isn’t just a trip down memory lane; it’s proof that good music never really ages. Listening to it now, decades after its release, feels like rediscovering something you didn’t know you lost. Like finding $20 in an old jacket pocket, except instead of cash, it’s joy. So yeah, whether you’re a diehard fan or new to Brenda Holloway’s magic, The Very Best Of deserves a spot in your playlist. Just don’t blame me when you catch yourself humming “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” during Monday morning traffic. Trust me, though—it’s better than screaming into the void.

In total agreement with you Tomovox, such a pity Brenda was not recognised for her enormous talent back in the day!  Was fortunate to see her perform live just a few weeks ago at the Wigan Casino 40th anniversary celebrations in Skegness.  What a trouper and such a warm & friendly character too.  Have just purchased a CD on the KENT label "The Artistry of Brenda Holloway" including unreleased tracks from the Motown vaults.  Absolutely fabulous.  KTF

I keep coming back to the very strange thing that it seems some of the best things ever recorded at Motown never saw the light of day. This would have made for a great single. There is another Brenda Holloway track, "You're Walking Out With My Heart" that sounds like a great "lost" H-D-H classic, but in fact it was a Sylvia Moy / Henry Cosby production. That thing ROCKS!

This was originally slated to be released as Tamla 54144. But it was cancelled. They should have released it.

I wonder if it uses the backing track that Barbara Randolph used with her recording. Barbara's version is a West Coast production and I could see where maybe Brenda would have sung over the same track, being a West Coast artist as well.
