Percee P - Throwback Rap Attack

Review by George Andreas

Throwback Rap Attack by Percee P: A Boom Bap Love Letter That Still Slaps Alright, let’s get into it. Throwback Rap Attack by Percee P dropped in 2006 and man, this album is like a time machine straight to the golden era of hip-hop. If you’re into that raw boom bap sound, this one’s for you. Produced by some heavy hitters—Madlib, Oh No, and Cut Chemist—it’s got layers of grit, soul, and just enough weirdness to keep things interesting. First off, gotta shout out “Throwback Rap Attack (Madlib Original Version)”. This track is pure Madlib magic. The beat has that dusty, lo-fi vibe he’s known for, with drums so sharp they feel like they’re punching you in the chest (in a good way). Percee P absolutely bodied this joint—his flow is relentless, like he’s spitting from another dimension where bars are currency. What sticks with me about this cut is how smooth yet chaotic it feels at the same time. It’s like Madlib gave him a canvas full of broken glass and somehow Percee turned it into art. You can tell these two were vibing hard when they made this. Then there’s “Throwback Rap Attack (Oh No Remix)”, which flips the script entirely. Oh No took the original and added his own sinister twist, making it darker and more cinematic. The bassline hits different here—it’s deeper, almost menacing, but still funky as hell. I remember hearing this remix for the first time and thinking, “Yo, this sounds like what would play during a bank heist in an old-school action flick.” Percee doesn’t miss either; his delivery matches the mood perfectly. It’s wild how the same song can feel completely new depending on who’s behind the boards. One thing that really stands out about this project is how cohesive it feels despite all the remixes and instrumentals floating around. Peanut Butter Wolf clearly knew what he was doing executive-producing this thing. And props to Kelly Hibbert for mastering—it’s clean without losing that raw edge. Honestly, listening to this album now feels kinda bittersweet. Hip-hop doesn’t sound like this anymore. Not saying that’s bad or anything, but sometimes you just crave those punchy drums and unfiltered lyricism. Plus, knowing that dudes like Cut Chemist went digging through tapes they found in ‘87 makes me wanna go rummage through my uncle’s basement for forgotten gems. Random thought: if Percee P ever decided to drop a sequel called Future Rap Attack, I’d be front row buying tickets before anyone else even heard about it. Until then, we’ve got this masterpiece to remind us why boom bap will always have a place in our hearts.

Percee was also nominated for Verse of the Month by the Source Magazine. Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Throwback Rap Attack* by Percee P is like a time capsule of hip-hop creativity. It features production from some serious heavyweights—Madlib, Oh No, and Cut Chemist—all bringing their unique styles to the table. What’s wild is that one of the tracks, by Cut Chemist, remixes a one-sided tape he found back in '87, flipping it into stereo. How crazy is that? It’s not just an album; it’s a piece of hip-hop history stitched together with raw talent and old-school vibes. Released in 2006 on Stones Throw Records, it’s proof that boom-bap will always have a place in the hearts of rap fans.

[Verse: Percee P]
I rap with knowledge
Lines compiled in a complex style
Convey 'em intricately say 'em slay 'em and exile
Wild rap competitors get ready for my metaphoric
Phrase, Madlib amaze, as he displays
His track scratch and catch the record I match the tempo
With lyrics that swing, no strings attached
My brain causes migraines, with lyrics I reign
I came to dispose of foes and competition dissin' my name
Rap fans remember me for my lyrical chemistry
Brains might explode
Knowledge overloads my memory bank
All on the radio, I gotot a record out
In stores of yours, get wit it, get it and check it out
Clever whoever has it and don't pass it
I'll burn 'em like boric or hydrochloric acid
Or gastric juices, Percee P produced this
Style on the mic, biters are likely to use this
Crowds I entice, I charge the largest price
To rock, pockets are packed, the fact is I'm that nice
I'm poetical, to a science know every medical
Meaning, line 'em, define 'em in the order alphabetical
Rhymes vary, and carry proficient vocabulary
That won't diminish, but finish off any adversary
In a second, I reckon my rhyme will take effect
And just paralyze your body, from the neck and up
Adversaries I dominate, titles I accommodate
Out loud, the crowd proudly nominate
Me as the best emcee, Stones Throw invest in me
After I rock, girls flock, caressin' me
In parties a lot, Bacardi or not
I'll rock a 90 minute tape and leave nobody a spot
To bust a rhyme on it, I'll put a dime on it
You're gonna love it, and dub it, because I'm on it, uh
Don't try to riff, take a whiff of some coffee
Smack up those that act up, so back up off me
Laugh at ya like a psycho, might go after ya
Worse than the Valentine or Chainsaw Massacre
Any men within with talent
Challenging the P is not clever
They'll never walk or talk again
I build, your skills go downhill and dilapidate
Records I made will be played by half the state
Girls are winkin', I leave 'em thinkin'
Gotta rewind every line, before my rhyme finally sinks in
I'm not in college but knowledge I do accommodate
Since I'mma dominate, y'all know who to nominate
Rappers are runnin' around
I'm aimin' and gunnin' 'em down
With lyrics I dare them to front on me now
Got the balls? Boo me, fans send cards to me
Punchlines will stall Cooney, since y'all knew me
I've been deep like Paul Mooney
I might show up so get a hearse
Ain't no nigga worse than me when I kick a verse, mics blow up
Like a nuclear blast, you see a flash that melts ya
A fallout shelter can't help your ass
From Perce's versatility, hostility
You're wack black and lack the ability to kill the P
Women? I like, how I treat 'em? Like the mic
I plug it in, turn 'em on and get hype and go
On and on, I rap 'til my mic's worn, torn, done son
You're unreal, just like a unicorn
You make me sick when you contradict
If you diss me or piss me off I'mma stomp you quick, slick
