Phish - Walnut Creek

Review by Jena Bridges

Walnut Creek by Phish: A Sonic Rollercoaster That Sticks With You Let’s get real for a sec—Phish isn’t just a band; they’re an experience. And Walnut Creek, their 2008 live release, is no exception. This album feels like being let in on some cosmic secret only die-hard fans and the universe are privy to. It’s funky, soulful, jazzy, rocky—all at once—and somehow it works. Like peanut butter and jelly but way cooler (and messier). Recorded during one of their legendary shows in Raleigh, North Carolina, this record captures something raw, alive, and kinda magical. First off, let’s talk about “Down With Disease >”. Oh man, if there was ever a track that made me feel like my brain was melting into kaleidoscopic colors, it’s this one. The groove hits hard right outta the gate, and Trey Anastasio’s guitar work? Pure wizardry. You can almost see him shredding under those stage lights, sweat dripping as he takes you on a journey through dimensions unknown. What sticks with me most is how seamlessly they transition from chaos to melody—it’s like watching lightning strike and then hearing angels sing all in the same breath. Honestly, I’ve listened to this song dozens of times, and every time it feels new, like Phix pulling back another layer of reality I didn’t even know existed. Then there’s “Harry Hood.” If “Down With Disease” is the wild ride, “Harry Hood” is the come-down where everything clicks into place. There’s something so tender yet massive about this version. Page McConnell’s keys float around like whispers while Mike Gordon’s bass grounds you firmly in your seat. By the end, when Trey lets loose that soaring solo, it’s impossible not to feel goosebumps crawling up your arms. It’s triumphant, emotional, and honestly a little overwhelming—in the best way possible. It reminds me why live music matters, why we gather together in sweaty venues or fields just to hear humans make noise that somehow speaks directly to our souls. What makes Walnut Creek stand out isn’t just the technical brilliance (though props to Paul Languedoc for capturing these insane performances), but the vibe. Listening to this album feels like hanging out with old friends who always have a story you haven’t heard before. Whether it’s Jon Fishman keeping time like a mad scientist or Mike Gordon throwing down basslines that could wake the dead, everyone sounds like they’re having the time of their lives—and trust me, it’s contagious. Here’s the thing though: albums like this don’t really belong in neat little boxes labeled “review.” They spill over, resist definition, and demand you sit with them longer than you planned. So yeah, go ahead and hit play—but don’t say I didn’t warn you. Once Phish gets its hooks in you, good luck shaking ‘em loose. Oh, and hey—one last thought: whoever said rock stars couldn’t double as magicians clearly never heard Phish.

Notes

  • "On July 22, 1997, Phish performed the second show of their U.S. summer tour at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh, NC. A thunderstorm of biblical proportion passed directly over the venue during the show, letting loose a torrential downpour of rain, thunder and lightning that accentuated the electric nature of the concert. Fortunately the recordings (captured from the multi-camera lawn feed and 5.1 audio) remained dry enough to provide the masters for this release. Walnut Creek documents the collision between a force as imaginative and powerful as Phish in the summer of 1997 and the supreme forces of nature."
