Shake A Hand / Stranded In Deep Water by Red Foley – A Country Gem That Stands the Test of Time Alright, folks, buckle up because we’re diving into Shake A Hand / Stranded In Deep Water, a two-track marvel from country legend Red Foley. Released way back in 1953 (yep, even your grandparents might’ve spun this one), it’s a slice of pure folk-country goodness that feels like sipping sweet tea on a creaky porch. Let’s break it down. First off, let’s talk about “Shake A Hand.” This tune hits you right in the feels with its gospel-tinged vibe and Red Foley’s buttery-smooth vocals. It’s not flashy or overproduced—just honest music for people who appreciate simplicity. The lyrics are kinda like life advice wrapped in song form: shake hands, show kindness, don’t be a jerk. Simple yet profound, right? What sticks with me is how genuine Foley sounds. Like he’s not just singing—he’s living these words. You can almost picture him tipping his hat after every verse. Classic. Then there’s “Stranded In Deep Water,” which takes things in a slightly darker direction. If “Shake A Hand” feels like sunshine, this track leans more toward storm clouds rolling in. Foley sings about being stuck in deep water—metaphorically speaking, of course—and man, does he sell it. His voice carries this weight, this ache, that makes you wanna grab a paddle and help him out. It’s haunting but beautiful, like an old black-and-white photo you can’t stop staring at. I remember this track because it reminds me of those moments when life gets overwhelming, and all you want is someone to throw you a lifeline. Now, sure, this album—or rather, this single—isn’t gonna compete with today’s Spotify playlists full of auto-tuned pop stars and bass drops. But that’s what makes it so refreshing. There’s no gimmicks here, just raw talent and heartfelt storytelling. Plus, knowing it came out in ‘53 gives it this cool vintage charm, like finding a dusty record in your grandpa’s attic and realizing it’s gold. Here’s the kicker though: listening to Red Foley now feels oddly modern. Maybe it’s because we’re all searching for authenticity in a world obsessed with filters and perfection. Or maybe it’s just that good music never really goes out of style. Either way, Shake A Hand / Stranded In Deep Water proves that sometimes less really is more. So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed by life’s noise, give this little gem a spin. Who knows? You might find yourself shaking hands with strangers or daydreaming about rowboats. And hey, if nothing else, at least you’ll have something interesting to tell your friends instead of ranting about whatever TikTok trend they’re into these days.

i never would've thought of Foley as a guy who can cross any vocal style even if he can step outside the box. this record may be his best R&B record he's ever done. He'll always be a country artist and every now and then can cross onto the pop field.
