The Beautiful Losers - The Beautiful Losers

The Beautiful Losers – The Beautiful Losers Alright, let’s talk about this wild ride of an album. Released in 2003, The Beautiful Losers by The Beautiful Losers is like that one friend who shows up to a party wearing five different outfits at once—confusing at first, but kinda amazing once you get into it. With genres ranging from Electronic to Folk and styles hopping between Post-Punk, Experimental, and even Drone, this thing's got more layers than your grandma’s lasagna. And somehow, it works. Mostly. The band comes from all over the place—New Zealand, Germany, Japan, the US—and their global vibe totally shines through. You’ve got Adrian Borland (RIP, legend) producing, Nick Robbins mastering, and Raj Ramayya on vocals, tying everything together with his smooth-as-hell voice. Oh, and shoutout to Brett Boyd for pulling double duty on guitars AND backing vocals. Dude’s clearly got talent for days. Now, onto the tracks. I’ll be honest, there are a lot of songs here—like, 30 or something—but two stood out to me big time: “Cold As Ice (Demo)” and “Aphrodisiac.” “Cold As Ice (Demo)” kicks things off with this raw, stripped-down energy that feels super intimate, almost like they’re whispering secrets directly into your ear. It’s not perfect—it’s a demo, after all—but that’s what makes it stick. There’s no fancy polish, just realness. Like, imagine sitting in a dimly lit room while someone plays guitar and sings about heartbreak. Feels personal, right? That’s this track. Then there’s “Aphrodisiac,” which flips the script completely. This one’s lush, weird, and kinda hypnotic. David Khan’s keyboards swirl around like smoke, and Raj’s vocals float on top like he’s casting some kind of spell. It’s sexy without trying too hard, if that makes sense. Every time I hear it, I picture neon lights reflecting off wet pavement late at night. Doesn’t everyone need a song like that? One thing I dig about this album is how unpredictable it is. Just when you think you’ve got its vibe figured out, it throws a curveball. Like, how do you go from the moody drone of “Blackbody” to the acoustic sweetness of “Anjali” without blinking? Beats me, but somehow it flows. Kinda like life, ya know? Anyway, wrapping this up, The Beautiful Losers isn’t gonna be everyone’s jam. If you’re looking for something straightforward, this ain’t it. But if you’re into music that takes risks and doesn’t care much about fitting into boxes, give it a spin. Honestly, listening to it feels like flipping through someone’s old photo album—you never know what memory’s gonna pop up next. Oh, and here’s the kicker: despite being released in 2003, this album still sounds fresh today. Maybe because we live in chaotic times, and chaos loves company. Or maybe it’s just good music. Who knows?

Notes

  • Recorded at Elephant Studios in London 1980.
  • Photography by Roxanne New.
  • Restored from original tapes and mastered by Nick Robbins at Soundmastering Ltd. in London 2013.
  • With booklet, insert and obi-strip.
  • Recorded July 2002 - February 2003
  • "Currently (mid 2004), the music is being initially released as a double full-length CDR album entitled Beautiful Losers. It will be available on both kRkRkRk Recordings & Apoplexy - although it will not have a label "number" for either. This is because Peter felt the music did not really fit with the sound of either label. Originally, the intention was to create a third release vehicle, independent of both kRkRkRk & Apoplexy. In the event this looked like too much work & so the somewhat inelegant compromise described above has been chosen."

  • 20 page insert includes photos and complete lyrics in English and Japanese except for track 10 which is in Hindi.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *The Beautiful Losers* is like a musical passport. It blends genres from Electronic to Folk and styles like Post-Punk and Experimental, created by artists from New Zealand, Germany, Japan, and the US. Imagine this—Raj Ramayya’s vocals floating over Peter Wright’s guitar riffs, while Rustle Covini keeps the rhythm alive on drums. And get this—the album was mastered and engineered by Nick Robbins, who added his magic touch in the studio. With tracks like "Cold As Ice (Demo)" and "The Beautiful Losers," it feels like traveling through different worlds in just one listen. Not bad for an album released in 2003, huh?
