Album Review: "Classical Symphony" by Sergei Prokofiev Alright, so let’s talk about this gem of an album—Classical Symphony by Sergei Prokofiev. Released way back in 1991 under Conifer Classics (yeah, I know, it’s wild to think that was over 30 years ago), this one’s a proper deep dive into classical music with some seriously cool twists. Conducted by Mark Stephenson and featuring the London Musici orchestra, it's got all the hallmarks of a lush European production. And hey, if you’re into bassoons or flutes, you’re in for a treat because John Orford, Martin Gatt, Melbon Mackie, Meyrick Alexander, and Jonathan Snowden really bring their A-game here. Now, full disclosure: there are quite a few tracks on this album, but two stuck out to me like sore thumbs—or should I say, like sweet melodies? First up is Scherzo For Four Bassoons, Op. 12-bis. Honestly, how often do you hear four bassoons just shredding together? Not enough, right? The track has this playful energy, almost like the instruments are gossiping at a party. It’s quirky, unexpected, and kinda makes you wanna bust out laughing while still being totally mesmerized. Like, who knew bassoons could sound so... alive? Then there’s Gavotta from the Symphony In D ‘Classical’, Op. 25. This little number feels like stepping into a fancy ballroom where everyone’s dressed to the nines, sipping champagne, and pretending they’ve got life figured out. But here’s the kicker—it doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s something cheeky about the way the strings bounce around, like they’re poking fun at all the pomp and circumstance. You can practically picture people awkwardly waltzing and trying not to spill their drinks. Classic Prokofiev move—he gives you elegance with a wink. One thing I gotta mention is how smooth everything flows thanks to Mark Stephenson’s conducting. Dude knows what he’s doing, keeping the tempo tight without losing any of the emotional weight. And kudos to Christopher Palmer for the liner notes—they add some nice context without getting overly academic. Plus, shoutout to the London Musici for delivering such crisp performances across the board. So yeah, listening to this album feels like hanging out with an old friend who tells great stories but never brags about it. Is it perfect? Nah, nothing’s ever perfect. Some parts might feel a bit “meh” if you’re not vibing with the whole classical vibe, but honestly, that’s kinda the charm. It’s unapologetically itself, y’know? Here’s the weird part though—listening to this made me realize how much modern pop music borrows from stuff like this. Seriously, next time you hear a catchy hook or a bouncy rhythm in a chart-topper, think about these guys jamming away decades ago. Maybe Prokofiev was onto something we’re only now fully appreciating. Or maybe I’m just overthinking it after hearing too many bassoons. Either way, give this one a spin. Your ears will thank you later.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: Sergei Prokofiev’s *Classical Symphony* might sound like it’s from the 18th century, but it was actually written in the 20th century. Prokofiev wanted to create a piece that felt like Haydn or Mozart had time-traveled to his era. The version released in 1991 by Conifer Classics, with Mark Stephenson conducting the London Musici, adds its own flair. Fun detail—the album even includes a quirky *Scherzo for Four Bassoons*, showcasing some serious bassoon teamwork. It’s like classical music’s way of winking at tradition while still being bold.
