Ritz - Dance Until You Drop Special Disco Remix

Review by Real Manyuchi

Alright, let’s dive into this groovy little gem from the late '70s—Dance Until You Drop Special Disco Remix by Ritz. Released in 1979 under Epic Records in the UK, it’s one of those albums that just screams “Saturday night fever with a British twist.” Produced by Ken Gold (yeah, he knew how to make people move), this funk/soul disco masterpiece still has me reaching for my dancing shoes like it's fresh off the press. First up, you gotta talk about "Dance Until You Drop (Disco Remix)"—the title track and basically the heartbeat of the whole record. Man, this tune is infectious! It’s got that relentless bassline that feels like it’s pulling your feet onto the floor whether you want them to or not. The energy? Through the roof. Every time I hear it, I’m transported back to smoky clubs where glitterballs spin endlessly and nobody cares what time it is. That breakdown halfway through? Pure magic. Like someone took all the best parts of disco and cranked them up to eleven. Honestly, if you can listen to this without at least tapping your foot, check your pulse—you might be broken. Then there’s “Anyone Who Had A Heart”, which flips the script a bit. This one starts smooth as butter but sneaks in these lush strings and harmonies that hit different. There’s something raw yet polished about it, kinda like heartbreak wrapped in silk. You feel every word, even when they’re buried beneath layers of production gold. It’s not as wild as the title track, but man, does it linger. Days later, I’ll catch myself humming bits of it while brushing my teeth or whatever. Weird, right? But that’s the thing about good music—it sticks to you like gum on a hot sidewalk. What makes this album stand out isn’t just its killer tracks; it’s the vibe. Listening to it feels like stepping into another era—an age when disco wasn’t dead, it was alive, pulsing through veins everywhere. Sure, some might call it dated now, but honestly? That’s part of its charm. It doesn’t try too hard to be cool—it just is. And honestly, we could use more of that kind of authenticity today. Here’s the kicker though: after spinning this album, I couldn’t help but wonder—what ever happened to Ritz? They came out swinging with this banger, then… poof. Gone. Kinda breaks my heart a little, y’know? Like finding an amazing diner only to realize it closed decades ago. Still, their legacy lives on in these tracks, keeping us dancing until we drop—even if it’s just metaphorically these days. So yeah, give this album a spin. Crank it loud, let loose, and thank Ken Gold for reminding us what real disco sounds like.

Hi John, thanks for leaving a comment. Great to hear from you and to know you are still around the place. Can't recall what other 12" you have done I have got, but do know I have a US copy of Hands Down by Dan Hartman and an Australian 12" of Boogie Down (Get Funky Now) by Real Thing. Pity CBS Australia didn't get your name right in the above 12

Hi Jamie, Thanks for the love and posting. I have done so many tracks that I actually had forgotten about this one but when I played it I said DAMN... HAHAHA really captures a flavor of a time and as I worked with CHIC in promotion of their hits you can hear some of the vibe that I put into this. Thanks again and much respect John Luongo

Top tier late era Disco. I always referred to this period as Cocaine Disco. The bpm's shot up after '78 until things slowed down when boogie came to the fore in the early 80's.
