The Setup - Common Dubs

Review by Antonio Guzmán

Alright, let’s dive into Common Dubs by The Setup. This 2010 dubstep gem from the UK is one of those albums that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Released under ABAGA Records and with killer artwork by Mat Marsden (shoutout to him for setting the vibe), this thing hits hard in all the right places. First off, I gotta talk about “Under Attack.” Man, this track just grabs you by the collar and shakes your soul loose. It starts with these eerie synths that feel like they’re stalking you through a foggy alley at night—super cinematic but also kinda unsettling. Then BAM, the bass drops, and suddenly you're not walking anymore; you’re running. Like full-on sprint mode. That low-end rumble feels alive, like it’s breathing down your neck. You can tell The Setup wasn’t messing around—they wanted to make something raw, heavy, and unforgettable. And honestly? Mission accomplished. Every time I hear this track, I get goosebumps. Feels like being hunted by sound itself. Then there’s “The Unclean (The Setup Version).” If “Under Attack” is the predator, this one’s the aftermath. It’s slower, darker, almost like the music version of staring into an abyss while the abyss stares back. There’s this grimy texture to the beats, like someone took industrial waste and turned it into art. It’s not exactly what you’d call “pleasant,” but damn if it isn’t captivating. Around the halfway point, things shift—a little glitch here, a warped vocal sample there—and it pulls you deeper into its twisted world. This track sticks with me because it doesn’t try too hard to be cool or flashy. It just exists, unapologetically nasty and hypnotic as hell. You know, listening to Common Dubs, I realized how rare it is to find an album that makes you feel small. Not in a bad way, though—in a way that reminds you how big music can be. How it can swallow you whole if you let it. This record isn’t perfect, sure, but maybe that’s why I love it so much. It’s got grit. Character. Soul. And hey, fun fact: after spinning this album, I started noticing weird noises everywhere—like my fridge humming along to some invisible beat. Maybe that’s the real legacy of Common Dubs. It infects your brain and turns everyday life into a dubstep remix. Thanks for that, The Setup. Your music might’ve ruined normalcy forever, but I’m cool with it.
