Album Review: Purple by Shuggie Otis – A Funky, Soulful Trip from 1973 Alright, let’s talk about Purple by Shuggie Otis. This album is a total vibe, blending funk, soul, and blues into something that feels like a warm hug from the ‘70s. Shuggie was only in his early 20s when he dropped this gem on Epic Records back in 1973, but man, did he have his stuff together. It’s wild to think that this dude wrote, arranged, and produced most of it while his dad, Johnny Otis (yeah, THAT Johnny Otis), helped guide things behind the scenes. Now, I gotta say, this isn’t one of those albums where every track slaps you in the face with instant hits—this is more of a slow burn, the kind of record you need to sit with for a bit before it clicks. But once it does? Wow. Two tracks that really stuck with me are “Purple Pt. 1” and “Purple Pt. 2.” Yeah, they’re kinda split up weirdly across mono and stereo versions, which might make you go, “Wait… why?” But trust me, it works. “Purple Pt. 1” kicks off with this groovy bassline that just pulls you right in. Like, seriously, your head starts nodding without even asking permission. And then there’s Shuggie’s guitar work—it’s smooth as butter but sharp enough to cut through the mix. The whole thing has this laid-back swagger that makes you wanna grab a cold drink and chill somewhere shady. Honestly, if this song doesn’t put you in a good mood, nothing will. Then we got “Purple Pt. 2,” which flips the script a little. While Part 1 feels like a lazy Sunday afternoon, Part 2 brings more energy and grit. There’s this raw bluesy edge to it that reminds you Shuggie wasn’t just trying to make catchy tunes—he was telling stories. You can hear the emotion dripping off every note, like he’s pouring his heart out over those strings. It’s not flashy or overproduced; it’s real, ya know? One thing that strikes me about Purple is how timeless it sounds. Even though it came out almost 50 years ago, it doesn’t feel dated at all. Maybe it’s because Shuggie didn’t chase trends—he just made what felt right to him. That authenticity shines through, making it one of those records that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Oh, and here’s a random thought: listening to this album feels like finding an old photograph tucked inside a book. At first glance, it seems ordinary, but the longer you look, the more details jump out at you. By the end, you realize it’s way cooler than you initially thought. So yeah, give Purple a spin if you dig funky vibes with a side of soul. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself zoning out and daydreaming about life in the ‘70s. Peace out.

Interesting fact about Album

Here's something cool: Shuggie Otis was only 19 when he released his album *Purple* in 1973. He wrote, arranged, and produced most of it himself. The album blends Funk, Soul, and Blues, showcasing his incredible talent at such a young age. What’s wild is that the track "Purple" appears in four different versions on the same album—two parts, each in mono and stereo. It’s like he was experimenting with how people experience music. Not many artists have done that!

WOW! Amazing in 71 I was 8 years old, and sadly never heard this, And don't believe I ever heard any of his Music , until unknowingly The Brothers Johnson Cover of Strawberry Letter 23, and that was a Song that really struck me, and stayed with me for all this time, Still get the same chills on the back of the neck when I hear the first notes, Finally got to hear his Version not too long ago damn Amazing. and to think of how young he was writing the music that he was... mind-blowing!

Man that’s as REAL as it gets, when I think of all the garbage players we get to hear nowadays that are presented as blues and believe that they are playing the blues, Shuggie sets the record straight
