Three4listnin by Simon Wickham-Smith: A Sonic Puzzle You Didn’t Know You Needed Let’s get one thing straight—this album isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking for something to hum along to while washing dishes, Three4listnin will probably leave you scratching your head. But if you’re into music that feels like an uninvited guest at a dinner party—awkward but strangely fascinating—then buckle up. Released in 2007 on the Celebrate Psi Phenomenon label (yes, that’s a real name), this New Zealand-born record is part rock, part electronic, and fully experimental. It’s got all the markings of avant-garde weirdness, yet somehow it sticks with you. Take “Sealight,” for instance. This track hit me like a wave I didn’t see coming. At first, it just sounds like someone messing around with synths and guitars without any clear plan. But then, halfway through, there’s this moment—a shimmering chord progression or maybe just a glitchy sound effect—that makes you pause whatever you’re doing. For me, it was folding laundry. Suddenly, my socks didn’t seem so boring anymore. There’s something haunting about “Sealight,” as if it knows more about you than you’d care to admit. It lingers, man. Like that one awkward conversation from years ago that still pops into your brain at random times. Then there’s “The Horizontality Of Saskatchewan.” What even is that title? Sounds like a bad poetry assignment, right? But don’t let the name fool you. This track builds slowly, layer upon layer of distorted noise and distant echoes until it feels like you’re standing in the middle of nowhere, staring at a flat horizon. And honestly, isn’t that kind of beautiful? The song doesn’t try too hard to impress; instead, it lets its imperfections shine. By the end, you’re not sure whether you loved it or hated it—but either way, you remember it. What makes Three4listnin stand out is how unapologetically itself it is. It doesn’t care if you think it’s messy or confusing. In fact, it seems to thrive on being both. Listening to it feels like flipping through someone’s private journal—it’s raw, intimate, and occasionally uncomfortable, but also kinda magical. As I sat down to write this review, I realized something odd: despite its quirks, this album made me feel less alone. Maybe because it’s proof that art doesn’t have to be perfect to mean something. Or maybe because we could all use a little more horizontality in our lives. Whatever the reason, Three4listnin is worth a listen—even if only to remind yourself that music can still surprise you when you least expect it.
