Album Review: Progressive Rock Years 1970–1973 by Skaldowie Released in 2010 under Enigmatic Records, Progressive Rock Years 1970–1973 is a fascinating retrospective of Skaldowie's creative peak—a Polish band that carved out its niche in the prog rock scene. Despite being tied to Austria for this release, the album radiates an unmistakable Eastern European charm, blending classical influences with rock’s raw energy. It’s not just another prog rock compilation; it feels like flipping through a scrapbook of forgotten musical experiments. The lineup is stacked with talent: Konrad Ratyński handling vocals and bass guitar, Jerzy Tarsiński on guitar, Jan Budziaszek keeping rhythm on drums, and the multi-talented Andrzej Zieliński pulling double duty on organ and piano. Jacek Zieliński (perhaps related?) adds layers with violin, trumpet, and percussion. This isn’t your typical prog rock group—it’s more like a chamber orchestra gone rogue. Let’s talk tracks. One standout is "Gdzie Mam Ciebie Szukać (Live)". The live version brings an organic vibe, almost as if you’re sitting right there in the audience. Ratyński’s voice soars above intricate instrumental interplay, while the violin weaves in unexpectedly emotional moments. You can hear how much fun they’re having onstage—it’s infectious. Another gem is "Medytacje Wiejskiego Listonosza", which translates roughly to "Meditations of a Rural Postman." True to its title, the track unfolds like a daydream. The organ swells are cinematic, and the violin solo hits just the right balance between whimsy and melancholy. It sticks with you because it doesn’t try too hard—it simply breathes. The rest of the album holds up well, though some songs feel slightly dated. Tracks like "Juhas Zmarł" lean heavily into theatricality, bordering on over-the-top—but hey, isn’t that part of prog rock’s charm? Meanwhile, "Prześliczna Wiolonczelistka" closes things on a high note, showcasing the band’s ability to blend complexity with melody. What makes this album worth revisiting isn’t just its technical brilliance but also its quirks. Sure, the mix of Polish lyrics and classical instrumentation might feel niche, but that’s what sets Skaldowie apart from their Western counterparts. Listening to this record feels like stumbling upon a hidden attic full of dusty treasures—each song has something unique to offer, even if it takes a few listens to fully appreciate. Final thought? If you’re into prog rock or just curious about lesser-known acts from the '70s, give this one a spin. Just don’t expect perfection—this album wears its imperfections proudly. And honestly, isn’t life better when things aren’t all polished and predictable? Like finding a stray sock behind the couch, sometimes the oddities make everything cozier.

  • Since the late 60's to mid-70's Skaldowie were one of the most popular and best (pop)rock groups from Poland - along with Czerwone Gitary and Breakout. They played a combination of vintage rock, Polish folk, some jazz, pop and classical music - with prominent and splendid Hammond organ parts & really nice melodies.
  • In 1972 the band recorded a progressive and truly superb LP "Krywań, Krywań" - without a doubt their best (although relatively unknown) effort, slightly similar to Procol Harum & The Nice, but also to the early Premiata Forneria Marconi and some other Italian groups of this period!
  • This 80 minutes-long CD constains all the recordings made outside of Poland between 1970 and 1973 (but sung in their native language) and published in Czechoslovakia, East Germany and the Soviet Union.
  • For the first time on CD - in audiophile quality!
