Smart Alec & Clevor Cloggs RIP - Purple Boy

Purple Boy by Smart Alec & Clevor Cloggs RIP: A Dub Techno Beast from '94 That Still Kicks Ass Alright, let’s get this straight—Purple Boy isn’t just another relic from the UK’s electronic scene in the ‘90s. Nah, this thing is a raw, gritty punch to your eardrums, and it doesn’t apologize for being so damn good. Released on Digidub Records back in 1994, it’s one of those albums that feels like it crawled outta some smoke-filled basement studio where dudes were experimenting with sounds most people didn’t even know existed yet. First off, you gotta talk about "Donkey Dub." Holy hell, man. This track hits hard right outta the gate. It’s slow-burning but heavy as fuck, with basslines so thick they feel like molasses dripping through speakers. And those echoing drums? They’re not just there—they linger, haunting your brain long after the track ends. Max Quirk edited this beast (props to him), but The Lord DAT engineered it, and trust me, he flexed his skills hardcore here. “Donkey Dub” sticks because it’s got attitude. It doesn’t beg for attention; it demands it. Then there’s "Purple Boy," the title track. If “Donkey Dub” is the menacing bouncer at a club, “Purple Boy” is the sneaky guy slipping past everyone unnoticed until he starts throwing punches. It’s smoother, more hypnotic, but still packs a wallop. Terry Newman mastered this whole album, and dude clearly knew what he was doing—every layer of sound feels crisp without losing that underground edge. The synths swirl around like they’re lost in space, while the rhythm keeps dragging you deeper into its weird little world. You’ll remember this track because it messes with your head in all the right ways. Look, I ain’t gonna pretend this album reinvented the wheel or anything. But who gives a shit? What makes Purple Boy killer is how unapologetically itself it is. No glossy production tricks, no overthinking. Just two artists (RIP Clevor Cloggs—we miss ya) making music that feels alive, even now. Shout-out to Penny Metal too, for slapping together artwork that matches the vibe perfectly. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this album today feels kinda surreal. Like, these guys made something in ’94 that sounds fresher than half the recycled crap dropping in 2023. Maybe we’ve been doing music wrong all along. Or maybe we just need to dig deeper into the crates. Either way, Purple Boy reminds us why dub techno will always have a place in the dark corners of our playlists—and maybe our souls too. Now go spin it loud and scare your neighbors.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool little fact: The album *Purple Boy* by Smart Alec & Clevor Cloggs is a hidden gem from the UK’s electronic scene in 1994. It blends dub techno and dub styles, creating this raw, atmospheric vibe that feels both nostalgic and ahead of its time. What makes it even more special? The engineering was handled by someone named The Lord DAT, which sounds like a name straight out of a sci-fi movie. Plus, the track "Donkey Dub" might just be the quirkiest title ever. Props to Penny Metal for the artwork too—gotta love when creativity flows through every detail!
