Shall We Dance by Spektrum: A 1992 Rave Relic That Still Kicks Let’s cut to the chase—Spektrum’s Shall We Dance isn’t your run-of-the-mill electronic album. Released in ‘92 (yeah, that’s right, the golden era of bucket hats and questionable fashion choices), this UK-born gem straddles hardcore and breakbeat like a caffeinated squirrel on roller skates. And no, it wasn’t backed by some big-shot label; it proudly wears its “Not On Label” badge like a middle finger to corporate nonsense. Now, let’s talk tracks. First up, obviously, is the titular banger, Shall We Dance (Ribena Mix). If you’ve ever wondered what happens when rave culture has an identity crisis at a juice bar, here’s your answer. The Ribena Mix takes the original and slaps it with enough bass wobbles to make your eardrums shimmy. It’s chaotic but oddly hypnotic, like watching someone try to moonwalk while drinking Ribena out of the carton. You can’t help but nod along, even if your neck starts hurting halfway through. This track sticks with me because it’s got attitude—like, “I’m here to party, and I don’t care who knows it” kind of attitude. Another standout? Let’s just say there’s a hidden jewel buried deep in the tracklist—I won’t spoil which one—but it sounds like the soundtrack to a cyberpunk heist gone hilariously wrong. Imagine robots attempting to rob a bank but getting distracted by glitter cannons. That’s the vibe. It’s quirky, unpredictable, and makes you want to grab a friend and yell, “LET’S GO DO SOMETHING STUPID.” Reflecting on Shall We Dance, it’s wild how something from nearly three decades ago still feels so fresh. Maybe it’s nostalgia goggles talking, or maybe Spektrum were time travelers dropping beats from the future-past-future-whatever. Either way, this album reminds us that music doesn’t need polish to shine—it just needs heart, guts, and maybe a little too much caffeine. Oh, and fun fact: Listening to this album might make you crave Ribena. Don’t fight it. Just go with it.
