Alright, let’s dive into this slice of German rock history—1977 1987 by Stern Meissen. Released in 1992 on Deutsche Schallplatten Berlin, it’s a bit of a time capsule that blends Prog Rock and Pop Rock vibes with some serious lyrical depth. You can tell these guys were vibing hard to the sounds of their era while still keeping things fresh. First off, the album’s got personality for days. Tracks like Ich Bin Frei and Der Alte Auf Der Müllkippe stick out because they’re just so damn memorable. Ich Bin Frei kicks things off with this soaring energy—you can feel the freedom in the vocals and those guitar riffs hit you right in the soul. It’s one of those songs where you’re like, “Yeah, I’m free too, man!” even if you’re stuck at your desk job scrolling Spotify. The melody feels uplifting but grounded, kinda like when you're daydreaming about quitting everything to chase your dreams but know deep down you’d miss Netflix too much. Then there’s Der Alte Auf Der Müllkippe. This track is wild—it’s got this moody, almost cinematic vibe that pulls you in. The lyrics paint such vivid imagery; it’s basically storytelling set to music. Like, who doesn’t love a good tale about an old guy hanging around a landfill? Okay, maybe not everyone, but Stern Meissen makes it work. There’s something haunting yet oddly beautiful about how they weave melancholy and hope together. Feels like watching a Wes Anderson movie soundtrack, ya know? The rest of the album keeps the momentum going with tracks like Schönheit (super catchy) and Wir Sind Die Sonne (anthemic as hell). Honestly, it’s kind of impressive how Stern Meissen balances proggy complexity with pop sensibilities. They don’t overthink it or drown you in flashy solos, which could’ve easily happened given the genre. Instead, they keep it tight and let the emotions do most of the talking. What really struck me though was how unapologetically German this record feels—not just because of the language, but because of its raw honesty. These aren’t polished-to-death radio hits; they’re real stories told through rock ‘n’ roll. And yeah, sure, some moments might lean a little cheesy, but isn’t that part of the charm? So here’s the kicker—I listened to this album thinking it’d be another forgotten relic from the early '90s, but dang, it surprised me. It’s like finding an old Polaroid photo in your attic and realizing it tells a better story than any Instagram filter ever could. If anything, 1977 1987 reminds us that great music doesn’t need to shout to be heard. Sometimes, all it takes is a few heartfelt chords and a willingness to get a little weird. Oh, and fun fact: listening to this made me want to eat bratwurst. No clue why. Maybe it’s the whole “Deutsche Schallplatten” thing messing with my brain. Either way, props to Stern Meissen for making me hungry AND entertained. Geile Scheiße!

DDR (GDR) rock band from Meißen (Meissen, Saxony, Germany). They started as beat band in the mid 1960s, absorbing western influences alongside developing their own style. As Stern Combo Meissen they reinvented themselves as the foremost progressive rock outfit from the German Democtratic Republic in the mid 1970s onto the early 1980s. Throughout their career the "Stars of Meissen" have been constantly changing, and almost changed completely in between recording some albums. Yet they returned (almost) to their best-known line-up when reforming much later. See also the split-off band: A previous contributor listed the following run-down of band musicians...
