Album Review: Metak by Stoja – A Folk Journey Worth Remembering Released in 2018 under the Serbian-Montenegrin label Grand Production, Metak by Stoja is a heartfelt dive into folk traditions with a modern twist. This album doesn’t just stick to one genre—it blends folk, world, and country vibes seamlessly, making it feel like a warm hug from the Balkans. Produced by G. Ratković Rale and co-produced by Daniel Mag and N. Jovanović Šeka, the record shines with its layered arrangements and emotional depth. One track that sticks out is “Nešto Mi Govori.” It’s got this hauntingly beautiful melody that lingers long after the song ends. The lyrics—penned by Miladin Bogosavljević—are raw and relatable, capturing that universal feeling of uncertainty about love or life. Paired with Stoja's soulful delivery, it feels almost like she's whispering secrets directly into your ear. And can we talk about the backing vocals? With Daniel Mag, Rale, Ivana Selakov, and Maja Dukić adding their magic, the harmonies elevate the whole thing to another level. You’ll find yourself humming this tune days later without even realizing it. Another standout is “Gde God Da Pođem Tebi Idem.” This one hits different because of how personal it feels. The guitar work by G. Ratković Rale on this track is simple yet powerful, letting Stoja’s voice take center stage. It’s one of those songs where you stop whatever you’re doing mid-listen because something about it grabs hold of you. Whether it’s the poetic imagery in the lyrics (again thanks to Bogosavljević) or the way Stoja pours her heart into every note, it’s hard not to be moved. Plus, there’s a version featuring Šako Polumenta which adds an extra layer of grit and charm. What makes Metak stand apart isn’t just its stellar production but also the collaborative effort behind it. From Michael Fossenkemper’s mastering touch to Željko Komosar’s striking design, every detail feels intentional. Even the photography by Nebojša Babić gives the album cover a timeless quality that matches the music inside. But here’s the kicker—listening to Metak feels less like hearing an album and more like flipping through someone’s diary. Each song tells a story, sometimes messy, sometimes hopeful, but always real. In today’s world of overproduced pop bangers, Stoja reminds us why folk music still matters—it connects us to our roots while speaking straight to the soul. Unexpectedly enough, as I wrapped up my listen, I found myself thinking about how these songs would sound live. Would they lose their intimacy in a big venue? Or maybe they’d gain even more energy with an audience singing along? Either way, Metak leaves you wanting more—not just from Stoja, but from folk music as a whole. Rating: 8/10 Final Thought: If you’ve ever wondered what it’d be like to hear the Balkans sing their heart out, press play on Metak. Just don’t blame me if you end up crying in your coffee.
