Suburban Lawns – A Wild Ride Through Post-Punk Chaos Let’s just dive right in. Suburban Lawns’ self-titled album from 2018 is like finding an old mixtape in your attic that somehow still sounds fresh, weird, and kinda ahead of its time. The band blends Pop/Rock, Electronic, and straight-up Punk vibes into something unpredictable yet oddly cohesive. It’s not perfect—but who wants perfection anyway? This record feels alive. Two tracks stuck with me hard: "Mom and Dad and God" and "Flying Saucer Safari." First off, "Mom and Dad and God"—holy crap, this one hits different. Frankie Ennui’s vocals are dripping with sarcasm, like they’re mocking every rule you were ever told to follow. Su Tissue jumps in on backing vocals, adding layers of chaos that make it feel like a party where everyone’s slightly overcaffeinated but no one cares. There’s this synth line (shoutout E.J. Emmons) that sneaks up on you halfway through—it’s subtle, but once you notice it, you can’t unhear it. It’s like the song itself has a secret joke only cool people get. Then there’s "Flying Saucer Safari," which honestly might be my favorite track here. Who doesn’t love a good alien adventure? The bassline by Vex Billingsgate slaps so hard it could wake the dead—or at least convince them to boogie. Chuck Roast’s drumming keeps things tight while also feeling loose enough to let the chaos breathe. And when those keys kick in? Forget about it. You’re not just listening anymore; you’re strapped into some intergalactic joyride. Every time I hear it, I imagine myself driving down a neon-lit highway in a sci-fi movie that hasn’t been made yet. The whole album bounces between moody introspection ("Green Eyes") and chaotic dancefloor anthems ("Jam The Controls"). Tracks like "When In The World" remind me why Post-Punk will always have a place in my heart—it's messy, raw, and refuses to play nice. Meanwhile, "Intellectual Rock" flexes their ability to blend wit with razor-sharp riffs. One thing I gotta say—this isn’t background music. You have to pay attention. Whether it’s John McBurney shredding on lead guitar or Su Tissue laying down these killer keyboard lines, each track demands your full presence. Even the remastering job by Scott Davies gives it a crispness that makes everything pop without losing the grit. Here’s the kicker: for all the technical credits and fancy production notes, what really stands out is how human this album feels. These aren’t polished robots playing perfectly timed notes—they’re real people making mistakes, laughing, yelling, and having fun. That energy leaks out of every track and grabs you by the collar. And honestly? If aliens ever do land on Earth, I hope they bring a copy of Suburban Lawns back home. Because if we’re gonna go out, let’s go out dancing—and maybe arguing about whether punk is dead or not.

The brainchild of CalArts students William "Vex Billingsgate" Ranson and (Minneapolis born) Sue "Su Tissue" McLane, Suburban Lawns formed in Long Beach, California in 1978 out of the ashes of previous incarnations Art Attack and The Fabulons, recruiting Huntington Beach natives Richard "Frankie Ennui" Whitney and Charles "Chuck Roast" Rodriguez, as well as John McBurney (aka "John Gleur"). The 1979 debut single "Gidget Goes to Hell" (released on their own Suburban Industrial label) gained the band notoriety when its Jonathan Demme-directed music video was shown on Saturday Night Live. Their sole album, Suburban Lawns, produced by EJ Emmons, was released in 1981 on I.R.S. Records, featuring New Wave radio favorite "Janitor." Gleur departed during the recording of the Richard Mazda-produced 5-song EP Baby, released in 1983, and the band folded shortly afterward. The lyrics of "Janitor" were derived from a real-life conversation between Sue McLane and friend Brian Smith. According to Brian, the two were conversing in a loud room when they first met: "She asked me what I did for a living. I said 'I'm a janitor,' and she thought I said 'Oh my genitals.' Frankie overheard this and wrote the song." After Suburban Lawns folded, Whitney and Ranson formed a new, short-lived band called The Lawns, while McLane attended Berklee College of Music, where she studied piano. In 1982 McLane recorded a solo album, Salon de Musique. She also played the role of Peggy Dillman in Demme's 1986 comedy movie Something Wild.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The album *Suburban Lawns* by Suburban Lawns, released in 2018, is a wild mix of genres like Post-Punk, New Wave, and Punk. It’s packed with quirky tracks like "Mom and Dad and God" and "Flying Saucer Safari." What makes it even cooler? Su Tissue, one of the band members, not only sings lead vocals on several tracks but also plays bass guitar and keyboards. Talk about multitasking! Plus, the album features contributions from a bunch of talented folks—like Chuck Roast on drums and backing vocals, and John McBurney shredding on lead guitar. It’s got this chaotic yet creative vibe that feels straight outta the '80s underground scene.

Quirky, artsy, entertaining new wave gem! Definitely a must for any punks, new wavers, or lovers of the avant garde. The only thing that keeps me from giving this 5 stars is that some of the songs on the record don't shine quite as much as others. Overall fantastic though. Highly recommended!
