Thieves Like Us - Mind Made

Mind Made by Thieves Like Us: A New Wave Gem That’ll Mess With Your Head (In a Good Way) Alright, let’s talk about Mind Made. This 1980 rock album by Thieves Like Us is one of those records that sneaks up on you. It’s got this raw, unpolished charm—like someone spilled their brain onto tape and called it art. Released across the Netherlands, UK, and Italy via Earlobe Records and Durium, it's not exactly mainstream but damn if it doesn’t feel alive. The first track, “Mind Made,” hits you right away. The opening riff? Pure tension. It’s like walking into a room where everyone’s staring at you, but instead of freaking out, you start vibing with the awkwardness. There’s something hypnotic about how the guitars swirl around Meredith and Stonor’s cryptic lyrics—it feels like they’re whispering secrets meant only for you. And when the chorus kicks in? Whoa. You don’t just hear it; you feel it. It sticks to your ribs long after the song ends. Then there’s “Strike Out.” If “Mind Made” is all moody introspection, this one punches you in the gut. Barron and Parish really brought their A-game here. The bassline grooves so hard it almost distracts from the fact that the vocals sound kinda pissed off—but in a good way, y’know? It’s rebellious without being over-the-top, like a kid flipping off authority while still showing up to class. I can’t help but air-drum every time the beat drops—it’s infectious as hell. What makes Mind Made stand out isn’t just its sound—it’s the vibe. These guys weren’t trying to reinvent the wheel, but they sure put some weird spikes on it. Listening to this album feels like eavesdropping on a late-night conversation between restless souls who’ve seen too much but refuse to shut up about it. Here’s the kicker though: for an album born in three different countries, it doesn’t scream “global collaboration.” Instead, it feels personal, almost claustrophobic. Maybe that’s why it slipped under the radar back then. But honestly? That just makes finding it now feel even cooler. Like uncovering a hidden treasure chest full of sharp edges and glittering chaos. So yeah, give Mind Made a spin if you’re tired of polished crap and wanna hear something real. Just be warned—it might mess with your mind. Funny enough, that’s probably exactly what they wanted.

I saw TLU at the Cavalier in Eastbourne around 78-79. Was really impressed with everything they played. The old man mask on the keyboard player was very memorable.
A couple of years later I found “Strike Out” in a local record shop. After that I never heard of them again, until now. ?

Saw this concert on german television in 1980 and always thought they were americans. Somehow, I lost my video tape some years later. Thank you very much for sharing this!

The band who proved that you really can be "too good to make it".  I saw them at the Cellarvino in Weymouth (I still have a bootleg audio cassette of that one - sorry Mr. Gray!) and at The Pinecliff in Bournemouth.  Best live band I ever saw - and I've seen EVERYONE!

Sorry, it's just been pointed out to me that it was the Riverside Inn, Winchester in 1978, not 1998. Senior/blonde moment, or too much alcohol, I'm not sure which, anyway 1978 at the Riverside was a great gig I will never forget.

Used to watch them in Weymouth at the end of the 70's/1980. Brilliant and original, this is priceless.
