Album Review: Drift Away by Uncle Kracker Featuring Dobie Gray Released in 2003 under Lava Records, Drift Away is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. It's not trying to reinvent rock music, but it doesn’t have to. With its roots firmly planted in classic vibes and a modern twist, this record feels like an old friend you haven’t seen in years—familiar yet refreshing. The album made waves across the US and Europe, proving that sometimes simplicity trumps all the bells and whistles. Let’s talk about the tracks, shall we? First off, there’s “Drift Away (Radio Edit).” This version strips things down just enough to make it radio-friendly without losing the soul-soothing essence of the original vibe. What sticks with me most is how smooth it feels—it's the kind of song you can blast on a summer drive or let play softly during a lazy afternoon. You don’t need flashy lyrics here; it’s more about the groove and nostalgia it brings. And yeah, hearing Dobie Gray alongside Uncle Kracker adds this cool layer of generational harmony. It’s almost like they’re passing the torch through melody. Then there’s “Drift Away (Album Version),” which gives listeners a bit more room to breathe. The extended cut lets the instrumentation shine, especially the guitar riffs that subtly weave in and out. There’s something raw about this take—it reminds me of sitting around a campfire where everyone’s singing along but no one’s overthinking it. That’s what makes it memorable for me. It’s loose, unpolished in the best way, and totally authentic. Looking back, Drift Away isn’t groundbreaking in terms of genre-bending or lyrical genius, but maybe that’s why it works so well. Sometimes, music doesn’t need to try too hard—it just needs to connect. And honestly, I think Uncle Kracker nailed that balance. Here’s the kicker though—this album came out nearly two decades ago, and yet, when I hear these songs today, they still hit differently. Maybe it’s because life gets busier as time goes on, and tunes like these remind us to slow down. Or maybe…just maybe, it’s proof that good music never really drifts away after all.

My dad was a bit of a racist but he loved black music. He had approximately around 400 LP's and a quarter of them were black artists. When he wanted to jam those were the ones he played. I was blessed to hear some of these songs as a kid born in '72. I grew up listening to Motown in a small city in Michigan. I never agreed with his politics but damn....he knew good music.

I loved that Dobie Gray, himself was apart of this. It's heartwarming. And if I wrote a song for my favorite singers and bands, this would be it. Because I drift away
