Review by Mark Guertin

Album Review: An Anthology Of Noise Electronic Music Sixth A Chronology 1957-2010 Released in 2010 by the Belgian label Sub Rosa, this sprawling anthology feels less like a traditional album and more like an archaeological dig through the evolution of experimental electronic music. Curated by Guy Marc Hinant (GMH), it’s a dense collection spanning over five decades, with tracks that explore noise, musique concrète, industrial grit, and abstract soundscapes. It's not for everyone—this is heady stuff—but if you’re into challenging auditory experiences, it’s gold. The album doesn’t follow any predictable structure; instead, it dives straight into its raw, unfiltered essence. Tracks vary wildly in tone, texture, and intent, reflecting the diversity of artists who contributed to this chronology. Two tracks stood out to me immediately: “Melkweg, Amsterdam” and “Fulmination.” “Melkweg, Amsterdam” hits hard because of how visceral it feels. Named after the iconic venue in Amsterdam, the piece captures what sounds like layers of machinery grinding against each other, interspersed with faint echoes of human activity. There’s something haunting about it—it’s chaotic yet strangely rhythmic, almost as though the listener is eavesdropping on a secret industrial ritual. I kept coming back to this one because it’s both unsettling and hypnotic. On the flip side, “Fulmination” punches differently. It starts off deceptively quiet, building tension with low-frequency drones before erupting into a wall of distorted noise. The transition feels violent but deliberate, like being caught in the middle of a storm that’s been brewing for centuries. What makes it memorable isn’t just the intensity—it’s the way it lingers long after the track ends, leaving you slightly disoriented. The design work by Peter Maybury deserves a shoutout too. The packaging mirrors the eclectic nature of the music itself, while Gabriel Séverin’s mastering ensures that every hiss, buzz, and crackle comes through crystal clear. And those liner notes? GMH knows his stuff—he writes with passion and insight, offering context without spoon-feeding interpretations. This anthology isn’t background music—it demands your attention. At times, it can feel overwhelming, especially when tracks like “Virus” or “Ego Masher” push boundaries so far they verge on abrasive. But that’s kinda the point. This isn’t meant to comfort you; it’s meant to challenge you, to make you think about sound in ways you never considered. What struck me most, though, was how personal it felt despite its academic roots. Listening to these pieces is like flipping through someone’s diary of sonic experiments. You don’t always understand everything, but you get glimpses of brilliance along the way. Final thought: If noise and experimental music are your jam, grab this anthology. Just don’t expect easy listening—it’s more like a puzzle box filled with sharp edges. Oh, and here’s a weird thing: halfway through writing this review, my cat started growling at the speakers. Make of that what you will.

Why do I keep exploring Daniel Menche's work? Because some years back about 20, I heard something of his that had alot more atmospheric qaulity to it before he did his usual red lined noise schtick. This is good don't get me wrong..I'm still looking. Thanks for posting.

One of my favorite tracks in the Anthologies.

If I understand correctly, there may be one more volume coming up in the series.
