Review by Kristian Matthews

Album Review: It’s A Punk Thing You Wouldn’t Understand Alright, let’s talk about this wild ride of an album. Released in 1993 by Shakefork Records, It’s A Punk Thing You Wouldn’t Understand is one of those raw, unfiltered snapshots of the emo and punk scenes that feels like it was made just for misfits who didn’t fit anywhere else. And yeah, the title says it all—this isn’t for everyone. If you’re not into chaotic guitar riffs, angsty lyrics, or tracks that feel like they were recorded in someone’s garage (in the best way possible), then maybe don’t hit play. But if you are? Buckle up. The album kicks off with “Complex,” and honestly, it’s hard to forget. It starts with this jittery guitar riff that sounds like your brain on caffeine overload. The vocals come in all scratchy and desperate, like the singer’s trying to explain something super important but can’t quite get the words out right. By the time the chorus hits, you’re either headbanging or wondering what planet this came from. Either way, it sticks with you. There’s something so real about how messy it feels—it doesn’t try too hard to be perfect, and that’s exactly why it works. Then there’s “Talk.” Oh man, this track slaps. It’s got this driving rhythm that makes you wanna grab a mic (or a hairbrush) and scream along. The lyrics are kinda cryptic, talking about secrets and lies or whatever, but it’s more about the energy than the meaning. Halfway through, there’s this breakdown that feels like the musical equivalent of throwing a chair across the room. It’s cathartic as hell, and I swear, every time I hear it, I end up shouting louder than I meant to. Other tracks like “Scary Kids Scaring Kids” and “Let’s Hear It For Love” keep the vibe going strong, mixing punk grit with emo heartache. Even quieter moments like “Celena” have this haunting quality that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. And props to Cyrus/No Radio Productions for the cover art—it’s simple, but it fits the whole DIY aesthetic perfectly. What makes this album stand out isn’t just its sound; it’s the attitude. This was 1993, remember? Grunge was ruling the airwaves, and here comes this little underground gem saying, “Nah, we’re doing our own thing.” Sure, some songs feel rough around the edges, but that’s part of the charm. It’s like finding a mixtape at a thrift store—you don’t know where it came from, but once you press play, you can’t stop listening. So, would I recommend It’s A Punk Thing You Wouldn’t Understand? Absolutely. Just don’t go into it expecting polished production or radio-friendly hooks. This is music for people who want to feel something, even if that something is confusion or rage. Honestly, it’s kinda amazing how albums like this remind us that music doesn’t always need to make sense—it just needs to exist. And hey, fun fact: rumor has it the band members barely knew each other before recording this. Makes you wonder… maybe punk really is a thing most folks wouldn’t understand. Or maybe they just hadn’t met the right weirdos yet.

you're lyrics are a little wrong. and so are ALL of the internet lyric sites i could find. He's not that hard to understand, just put headphones on. "Celena's pregnant," not packing.(listen to the last two times he says it before saying "Celena's leavin, Celena's leavin' me". and the last line is "maybe today's the day she'll leave" , but good job on getting most of them right! (seriously) 'cause most of the lyrics on ALL the lyric sites say "Celena's brave " (??! doesnt even make sense with the song) and the last lyric is listed as "maybe today she'll drink seaweed"....even more WTF. among other wrong lyrics about the news report on TV, and they also make no sense. My name is Celina and this band and song were introduced to me at 11 (1995), still have the lyric sheet printed out from a website in 1995 with the correct words, stood outside of bars and shows and drunkenly/loudly sung this with people/had it sung to me correctly, and after 24 years of blaring this song in my ears, I'm 99.9% positive on the lyrics.

Ah this has so many young memories tied to it, I first heard it off that comp (had the 12in Vinyl ). I later got Blurred In Six and listened to it all the way to Boston from Texas in 94!!! This music still holds a special place in my heart, thanks Bob for the memories because I started dating my wife at the same time and we are on year 19!!!
