Review by Ben Curry

Funkymix 7: A Genre-Bending Time Capsule from 1991 Released in 1991 under the Ultimix label, Funkymix 7 by Various Artists is a vibrant mashup of Electronic, Hip Hop, Funk/Soul vibes that feels like flipping through a musical kaleidoscope. With styles ranging from Pop Rap to RnB/Swing and even dipping into Hip-House, this album captures an era where experimentation wasn’t just encouraged—it was celebrated. Coming out of the US during one of music’s most eclectic decades, it’s no surprise this record has aged into something quirky yet timeless. One standout track that grabs attention right away is “Same Song.” If you’re familiar with Digital Underground—or just love hearing Tupac Shakur drop bars before he became a global icon—you’ll immediately get why this tune sticks. It’s got swagger, humor, and enough funky basslines to make your speakers feel alive. There’s something about how the horns blare over the beat while Shock G delivers punchline after punchline that makes it impossible not to nod along. You can tell they weren't taking themselves too seriously here, but man, did they nail it. Another gem on the album is “This House (Parts 1 & 2).” Splitting the track into two parts might sound gimmicky at first glance, but trust me—it works. The groove builds slowly, layering synths and drum machine hits until you're fully immersed. By Part 2, it transforms into this euphoric dancefloor anthem that could easily fit into both a sweaty club night or a chill hangout session. What makes it memorable isn’t just its infectious rhythm; it’s how seamlessly it blends different genres without ever feeling forced. This is what happens when artists let creativity run wild without overthinking things. Tracks like “Hold You Tight” and “Dangerous On The Dancefloor” round out the collection with their own unique flair, showcasing the diversity packed into these twelve songs. While some tracks lean more toward laid-back vibes, others crank up the energy, ensuring there’s never a dull moment. It’s almost as if every song tries to outdo the last, creating this sense of friendly competition between genres and styles. Reflecting on Funkymix 7, it’s hard not to appreciate how bold and unapologetic it feels. Sure, some production choices scream ‘90s nostalgia, but that’s part of its charm. Listening to it now feels like revisiting an old friend who still knows how to throw a great party. And honestly? That unexpected mix of raw talent and pure fun is what keeps albums like this relevant decades later. Who would’ve thought combining Pop Rap with Hip-House could sound so… well, funky? Guess sometimes rules are meant to be broken.
