Album Review: What It Do by West Coast Stone Alright, let’s talk about What It Do, the 2006 G-Funk gem from West Coast Stone. If you’re into that laid-back, synth-heavy groove that screams “Cal-i-for-nia,” this one's for you. Released under Choose Up Entertainment and Slunk Music, the album feels like a love letter to the West Coast sound with just enough modern twists to keep it fresh. First off, gotta shout out the producers—West Coast Stone himself handled most of the tracks (1-18, 20-25), while Mr. Luna slid in on track 19. You can tell they were going for that OG vibe but still wanted to make something new. And honestly? They kinda nailed it. Now, onto the tracks. I’ll admit, not every song hit me right away, but two stood out so hard I had to rewind them more times than I care to admit. The first is "Step Back." Man, this joint slaps. The beat has that slow-burning bounce, perfect for cruising down the block or just zoning out. The hook sticks in your head like gum on a hot sidewalk—it’s simple, catchy as hell, and makes you wanna nod your head even if you’re sitting still. Plus, there’s this little synth riff in the background that sounds like sunshine melting through palm trees. Yeah, it’s THAT type of vibe. Then there’s "What It Do," the title track. How could I skip this one? It’s got all the swagger you’d expect from a track with its name. The bassline hits deep, and the verses are packed with those classic braggadocio bars we all secretly love. But what really gets me is how smooth the flow is—it doesn’t try too hard, which makes it feel authentic AF. Like, yeah, this dude knows exactly what he’s doing. No forced energy here, just pure confidence. Other bangers worth mentioning include “Bailin Down The Block” (great opener vibes) and “Holla,” which closes things out strong. Oh, and don’t sleep on “Slunk Break”—it’s short but adds that raw edge the album needed somewhere in the middle. Here’s the thing though—this isn’t some groundbreaking masterpiece that’ll change your life forever. It’s just solid. Like, really solid. It reminds me why I fell in love with G-Funk in the first place: no frills, no overthinking, just good beats and vibes. Sometimes that’s all you need. But hey, here’s the kicker—I listened to this album during a road trip up the coast last summer, windows down, wind messing up my hair. By the time “Outro” came on, I realized I hadn’t changed the playlist once. That says something, doesn’t it? So yeah, give What It Do a spin if you’re missing that old-school West Coast magic. Just don’t blame me if you end up stuck in a nostalgic loop for days. Trust me, it happens.
