Album Review: Yondo Syster & Soukous Stars – Yondo Syster Soukous Stars Released in 1991 under the Kabako label, Yondo Syster Soukous Stars is a vibrant celebration of Soukous music—a genre that effortlessly blends African rhythms with Caribbean influences. Hailing from France but deeply rooted in Congolese traditions, this album showcases the talents of Yondo Syster alongside an ensemble of skilled musicians known as the Soukous Stars. With arrangements and production led by Lokassa Ya Mbongo, who also contributes rhythm guitar, the record delivers a rich tapestry of sound that feels both timeless and fresh. The album spans a variety of tracks, including standouts like “Bazo” and “Zero.” These songs are not just memorable; they stick to your soul like glue. “Bazo,” for instance, opens with a hypnotic bassline courtesy of N’Gouma Shungu “Lokito,” setting the stage for Yondo Syster’s emotive lead vocals. The interplay between Dally Kimoko’s intricate lead guitar licks and Manu Lima’s lush keyboard work creates a sonic landscape that’s hard to walk away from. It’s one of those tracks where you find yourself humming along even after it’s over, despite not knowing all the lyrics (thanks to its infectious melody). Then there’s “Zero,” which takes things up a notch with its driving percussion and layered harmonies provided by backing vocalists Ballou Canta, Luciana, Redy Amisi, Shimita, and Zitany Neil. This track has a way of making you feel alive—like you’re at a festival somewhere sunny, surrounded by people dancing without a care in the world. Its dub counterpart, “Zero Dub,” strips back some elements while amplifying others, giving listeners two distinct ways to experience the same core vibe. One thing worth noting about this album is how cohesive it feels despite its diversity. Tracks like “Naya (Dub)” and “Duniya” explore more introspective tones, offering moments of reflection amidst the high-energy grooves. Meanwhile, the photography and sleeve design by Catherine Millet perfectly capture the spirit of the music—simple yet striking, much like the compositions themselves. What makes Yondo Syster Soukous Stars special isn’t just its technical brilliance or cultural significance—it’s the way it invites listeners into its world. Whether you’re familiar with Soukous or hearing it for the first time, the album welcomes you with open arms. And honestly? That’s kinda rare these days. As I sit here thinking about it, I can’t help but wonder if Lokassa Ya Mbongo realized he was crafting something that would still resonate decades later. Maybe he did. Or maybe he was just having fun doing what he loved. Either way, hats off to him—and to everyone involved—for creating a piece of art that continues to move feet and hearts alike. Oh, and hey—if you ever stumble across this album in a dusty old record shop, grab it. Trust me, your ears will thank you.
