- About Me: Hello, I'm Sheifalika Bhatnagar and I'm an environmental journalist living in Memphis, TN.
Memphians may not seem to be too concerned with environmental issues, on the surface, but I know the city is making huge strides in the "green" movement because of people like Josephine Williams, Alvin Harris, Margot McNeely, Adam Guirerro, Ben Vaughn and Melissa Petersen.
Probably names you've never heard of before, these people are only a few of the many unsung heroes in Memphis, who are facilitating real environmental changes that benefit many of us. They are people like just like you. Jobs, school, bills, little-to-no free time are stresses that many Memphians face. It's time to try something new.
Plant a pomegranate tree and enjoy the huge red blossoms before they transform into succulent fruit. Build a Bluebird house with your family. Go squirrel-fishing with a stick, string and a piece of cheese. Perhaps the flutter of yellow, blue and orange Monarch butterflies dancing in your yard, when you get home, would be enough to brighten your day. But it takes the right garden for that kind of "welcome home."
The point is to get outside and connect with something other than concrete and billboards.
Transitioning from an urban/metropolitan lifestyle to an ecologically-minded way of life is intimidating for many people.
There are far too many doom-and-gloom-speeches in the national dialogue involving environmental issues.
Misinformation on hot-button environmental issues is widespread within the media and political arenas, leaving the rest of us to figure out what to do on our own.
Citizens who are interested in the environment or willing to learn more do not, necessarily, know where to look for guidance. That's where I can lend a little help.
The fact is that understanding the impact we, as a society, make on the natural world begins at home - in Memphis, TN.
My blog, Jolly Green Journalist, will focus on the meaningful and practical methods of "going green" as well as serve to document the state of environmental progress in Memphis as it continues to unfold.
The goal of Jolly Green Journalist is to educate and motivate people like you to understand and act on environmental issues, locally.
I hope to help guide people through the unique challenges of learning how to become more ecologically-aware and actually testing it out for themselves with easy, DIY, video tutorials on things to incorporate around the home with family and friends.
My audience includes anyone remotely interested in the environment as well as local Memphians, who are natural-born leaders in their community.
Join me, ask questions and we will see if urban sustainability is possible in Memphis, TN.
