Album Review: ひとりにさせて 故郷け遠く by 城卓矢 Let’s be real—there’s something about old-school Japanese pop that just hits different. Like, it feels like you're flipping through someone's diary from the '70s but in song form. That’s exactly what happened when I stumbled on ひとりにさせて 故郷け遠く by 城卓矢 (Takuya Jo). Released way back in 1978 under Philips, this Kayōkyoku gem is one of those albums that sneaks up on you emotionally. It’s not perfect, and honestly, some parts feel kinda dated now, but man… there are moments here that stick with you. First off, let’s talk about “故郷け遠く…” (Hometown Far Away). This track? Wow. Just wow. The melody has this bittersweet vibe to it, like you’re staring out a train window watching your childhood fade into the distance. 菊地正規 (Masanori Kikuchi) really nailed the composition—it’s simple yet so full of longing. And then there’s the lyrics by 藤沢こうじ (Koji Fujisawa), which hit hard if you’ve ever felt homesick or disconnected. I mean, who hasn’t had that moment where they realize home isn’t just a place anymore? For me, this song brought back memories of family dinners and summer nights spent chasing fireflies. You know, the stuff you don’t appreciate till it’s gone. Then there’s “ひとりにさせて” (Leave Me Alone). Oh boy, does this one pack a punch. Arranged by 藤井じゆん (Jiyun Fujii), it starts soft, almost whispery, but builds into this emotional crescendo that makes your chest ache. There’s a rawness to 城卓矢’s voice here—he sounds tired, vulnerable, maybe even a little broken. And honestly? That’s what makes it unforgettable. Sometimes music doesn’t need to be polished to move you; sometimes all it needs is honesty. Listening to this track made me think about those late-night drives where you just want silence but also don’t because silence means thinking too much. Ugh, heavy stuff. One thing that stands out about this album is how cohesive it feels despite being nearly 45 years old. Sure, it’s rooted in its time—you can hear hints of ‘70s production quirks—but the emotions still translate. Whether it’s the gentle sway of strings or the subtle use of piano, every element feels intentional, like they knew they were crafting something personal. Here’s the weird part though: after listening to this album, I found myself wondering why more people don’t talk about Takuya Jo today. Like, seriously, how do artists like him slip through the cracks? Maybe it’s because his work was overshadowed by bigger names at the time, or maybe it’s just bad luck. Either way, discovering ひとりにさせて 故郷け遠く felt like finding an old photograph tucked inside a book—you didn’t expect it, but it stirs something deep inside you. So yeah, give this album a spin if you’re into nostalgic vibes or just need something to cry softly to. Just don’t blame me if you end up missing places and people you haven’t thought about in years.
