Album Review: "I Don't Love You" by 004 – A Ska-Rock Gem from 1982 Released in 1982 under the Spy Society label, I Don’t Love You by 004 is an underrated yet punchy addition to the ska-rock genre. Hailing from the US, this album blends raw energy with a quirky edge that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly unique. With Eliot Case handling engineering duties and sharing production credits alongside 004 themselves, the sound strikes a balance between polished professionalism and DIY grit. The standout track, “Brite Lite,” grabs your attention right away. It’s got that infectious ska rhythm—brass hits sprinkled over driving guitar riffs—that makes it impossible not to tap your foot. The lyrics are playful but carry a tinge of sarcasm, which adds depth without taking itself too seriously. What sticks with me most is how effortlessly catchy the chorus is; even hours after listening, you'll find yourself humming along. This isn’t just background music—it demands your focus. Then there’s the title track, “I Don’t Love You.” If “Brite Lite” is all about fun, this one leans into emotional vulnerability. The vocals have a raspy sincerity that cuts through the mix, supported by tight horn sections that elevate the mood rather than overpowering it. There’s something oddly relatable about its unfiltered honesty. You can almost picture the band pouring their hearts out in some dimly lit studio, fueled by late-night coffee and cigarettes. Tracks like these remind us why rock-infused ska was such a cultural force back then. What makes I Don’t Love You memorable isn’t just its technical execution—it’s the vibe. Sure, the production might feel slightly dated now (hello, '80s reverb), but that’s part of its charm. Listening to it feels like flipping through an old photo album—you notice imperfections, sure, but they only add character. It’s wild to think this record came out four decades ago. In today’s hyper-polished streaming era, albums like I Don’t Love You serve as a reminder of when music felt more human, less algorithm-driven. So if you’re hunting for something offbeat yet meaningful, give this one a spin. Just don’t blame me if “Brite Lite” gets stuck in your head for days! Unexpected remark: Honestly, I kinda wish 004 had made more albums. Imagine what they could’ve done with modern tech—or at least fewer synthesizers.

Damn, I loved this band!
From a fan named Jeff on Colorado
Hi Doug,

I hope you don't mind me writing to you (I found your email on a youtube blog about 004).  I went to the University of Utah from 1981 to 1984, and I saw 004 MANY times (mostly at the Hole in the Wall Saloon).  You were, BY FAR, one of my favorite bands ever.  I had your 45's and your full length cassette of State of Affairs.  I lost that cassette years ago, and I was thrilled to hear your music again on youtube.  I just wanted to say THANKS for all of the GREAT music and for all of the GREAT times hearing you live!  You guys were the BEST!  A fan forever,

Jeff Moberg

BTW--My son Travis is a drummer, singer who has a very cool original band--I played your music for him and he absolutely loved it (another new fan)!
