Album Review: Avantura by Peđa D'Boy Bend – A Retro Gem That Still Shines Released in 1985 under the Jugoton label, Avantura by Peđa D’Boy Bend is a rock album that blends Pop Rock and New Wave with an unmistakable Yugoslav flair. It’s one of those records where every track feels like it was crafted with care, even if it occasionally stumbles into over-the-top territory. With Peđa Jovanović handling vocals, lyrics, and music—and Dragan Ilić laying down some killer basslines—this record has aged surprisingly well. Let’s cut to the chase: two tracks stand out for me personally. First up is “Noćni Mačor.” This song grabs you from the opening riff, thanks to Miško Plavi’s guitar work. The mix of urgency and swagger makes it impossible not to nod along. And then there’s Peđa’s voice—he sounds like he’s telling you a story late at night, maybe after a few too many drinks. You can almost picture him leaning against a lamppost somewhere in Belgrade, cigarette smoke curling around him. It’s raw, unpolished, but somehow perfect. The other standout is “Cico Maco,” which hits different because of its infectious energy. Zoran Miljuš on drums deserves credit here; his beats drive the whole thing forward like a runaway train. There’s also something about the way Jean Jacques Roskam layers his guitar parts—it gives the track this almost cinematic vibe. It’s playful yet edgy, kinda like the soundtrack to a forgotten cult movie. If you’ve ever danced awkwardly in your kitchen while cooking dinner, this is the kind of tune that would fit perfectly. Peđa Jovanović clearly poured his heart into both the lyrics and melodies, creating songs that stick with you long after they end. Even though the production isn’t as polished as today’s standards (shoutout to engineer Boban Petrović for making it sound decent), the imperfections add charm. Dušan Gerzić’s cover design deserves mention too—it’s bold, colorful, and totally ‘80s, just like the music inside. Looking back, what strikes me most about Avantura is how timeless it feels despite being so rooted in its era. Sure, the synthesizers might feel a bit dated now, but they’re part of what makes this album unique. Listening to it feels like stepping into a time capsule filled with big hair, leather jackets, and dreams of freedom during a complicated political climate. And honestly? That’s what makes Avantura special—it’s more than just an album. It’s a snapshot of a moment when Yugoslavia was still standing, and artists were free to experiment without worrying about what came next. So yeah, give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if “Noćni Mačor” gets stuck in your head for days.
