The Best Of – New World (1996): A Genre-Hopping Joyride That Still Kicks If you’re the kind of person who likes their music albums to neatly fit into one tidy box, The Best Of by New World is gonna make your brain do somersaults. Released in 1996 under Repertoire Records, this European gem straddles Folk, World, Country, Rock, and Pop with all the grace of a tipsy folk dancer. And don’t even get me started on its vocal-heavy style—it’s like karaoke night at an international pub crawl. Now, let’s cut to the chase. With tracks ranging from “Lo And Behold” to “Try To Remember,” this album feels more like a playlist someone threw together after raiding every genre aisle at a record store. But somehow, it works. Kinda like when you accidentally mix peanut butter and Sriracha but end up loving it. Standout Tracks: Why They Stick Let’s zoom in on two songs that’ll stick to your brain like gum under a park bench. 1. “Living Next Door To Alice” Oh man, where do I even start? If you’ve ever had nosy neighbors—or been one yourself—you’ll relate hard to this banger. It’s catchy as heck, with lyrics so vivid you can practically smell the overgrown hedges dividing these suburban dramas. The melody has this cheeky bounce that makes you wanna grab your ukulele and annoy your flatmates. Bonus points for reminding us all how weirdly fascinating other people’s lives can be. You know you’ve peeked through those curtains too! 2. “Kara Kara (German Version)” Okay, full disclosure—I didn’t expect much from this track because, well, German covers are hit or miss. But dang, did this one surprise me! There’s something oddly hypnotic about hearing heartfelt vocals delivered in another language. Plus, it’s proof that good music transcends borders faster than Ryanair flights. By the time the chorus kicks in, you’ll find yourself humming along even if you haven’t got a clue what they’re saying. Pro tip: Don’t Google translate the lyrics unless you want spoilers. The Rest of the Bunch Other highlights include “Rooftop Singing,” which sounds exactly like what it says—a breezy anthem perfect for impromptu rooftop concerts (just don’t fall off). Then there’s “Ain’t Nobody Ever Gonna Wonder Why,” a moody little number that feels like sitting in a dimly lit café while life happens around you. Honestly, flipping through this tracklist feels like scrolling through an old-school jukebox—there’s always something new to discover. Final Thoughts: Like Life, But Louder What makes The Best Of stand out isn’t just its eclectic mix of genres; it’s the way each song feels like a snapshot of human experience. Whether you’re laughing, crying, or awkwardly dancing alone in your kitchen, this album gets it. Sure, some tracks feel dated (hello, ‘90s vibes), but isn’t nostalgia half the fun? So here’s my hot take: Listening to The Best Of is like going to a house party where everyone brings a dish from a different country. Some dishes are amazing, others are… questionable, but you leave feeling full and entertained. And honestly, isn’t that what we all want from life—and music? P.S. Fun fact: This album pairs surprisingly well with leftover pizza. Try it.
