D Train’s “Music” Album Review: A Soulful Ride Through Time Alright, let’s talk about D Train’s Music, the 1988 album that’s kinda like a funky time capsule. If you’re into R&B/Soul with some serious boogie vibes and disco flair, this one's for you. It’s got everything—smooth vocals, tight grooves, and enough electronic beats to make your head nod even if you weren’t born when this dropped. First off, shoutout to James Williams (aka D-Train himself) for bringing those killer lead vocals. Dude can sing his heart out, no doubt. And Hubert Eaves III? The man was basically running the show as producer, programmer, and performer on most tracks. You can tell he had his hands all over this project, giving it that polished yet raw feel. Now, let me break down two tracks that stuck with me after spinning this record: Track 1: "Don't You Wanna Ride (The 'D' Train)" Man, this song is just… smooth. Like butter-on-hot-toast smooth. From the opening drumbeat by Howard King to the way James’ voice glides over the melody—it pulls you in immediately. There’s something hypnotic about how the bassline locks in with the percussion; it feels like being on a train ride where every stop is another excuse to dance. Plus, the lyrics are simple but effective: they don’t need to reinvent the wheel because the groove does all the talking. This track reminds me of summer nights back in the day—windows down, cruising slow, feeling unstoppable. Honestly, I could loop this forever without getting tired of it. Track 2: "Music (Vocal)" This one hits different. It starts off understated, almost teasing you, then BAM—the beat drops, and suddenly you’re hit with layers of synths, strings, and James’ soaring vocals. What makes this version stand out compared to the remixes or instrumentals is its energy. It doesn’t try too hard—it just flows naturally. Sinclair Acey’s arrangement deserves props here too; the string section adds this lush, cinematic vibe that elevates the whole thing. Listening to this track feels like stepping into a neon-lit club in 1988 where everyone knows the moves but no one cares if you mess up. It’s inclusive, fun, and impossible not to move to. --- Here’s the kicker though—this album wasn’t just big in the US. Nope, it traveled far and wide, hitting shelves in places like Japan, Brazil, France—you name it. That says a lot about its universal appeal. Whether you were chilling in Scandinavia or vibing in Greece, chances are someone nearby was bumping this record. One random thought while writing this review: Why isn’t there more hype around Eugene Bianco’s work as a contractor? Dude clearly knew how to wrangle musicians together because the cohesion across these tracks is insane. Also, whoever decided to slap Herb Powers Jr.’s mastering magic on this deserves an award. Everything sounds crisp, warm, and alive. So yeah, Music might not be perfect, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s real, it’s heartfelt, and it still slaps decades later. Honestly, listening to this album feels like catching up with an old friend who always knows how to cheer you up. Final verdict? If you’re looking for an album that’ll transport you straight to the golden era of funk and soul, grab this ASAP. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself dancing alone in your living room at 2 AM.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that the album *Music* by D Train, released in 1988, was a global phenomenon? It blended genres like Funk, Soul, and R&B, and found its way into over a dozen countries, from the US to Japan. What’s even cooler is that Hubert Eaves III, the mastermind behind much of the album’s sound, not only produced and programmed it but also performed on most of the tracks. The album featured standout songs like "Don’t You Wanna Ride (The 'D' Train)" and "Children of the World," which became dancefloor favorites. And fun fact: Herb Powers Jr., who mastered the album, was known for his work on countless iconic records of the era. Talk about a team effort!
