Finnegans Flat by Ada Jones & Steve Porter: A Time-Traveling Earful from 1911 Alright, buckle up, folks. We’re about to dive into Finnegans Flat, an album so old it could’ve been your great-grandma’s favorite wax cylinder playlist. Released in 1911 (yeah, that’s not a typo), this quirky little gem comes courtesy of Ada Jones and Steve Porter, two vocal powerhouses who somehow managed to make baritone and soprano duets sound like the hottest thing since sliced bread—which, fun fact, didn’t exist yet. The album falls under “Non-Music” and “Pop,” which feels like labeling a T-Rex as both “extinct” and “kinda jazzy.” But hey, genres were wild back then. Let’s talk tracks, shall we? Track That Sticks: "Finnegan's Flat" You can’t ignore the title track—it’s right there in lights, metaphorically speaking. This tune is less about melody and more about pure storytelling charm. Ada Jones’ soprano vocals float over the recording like sugar sprinkled on cornflakes, while Steve Porter’s deep baritone grounds it all with a touch of gruff humor. It’s basically musical vaudeville, minus the hats and slapstick comedy. You remember this one because it’s impossible not to hum along after hearing it once. The lyrics are delightfully oddball, painting vivid pictures of chaos and hilarity inside some poor Irishman’s flat. Spoiler alert: someone probably trips over a fiddle at some point. Another Banger: [Insert Second Track Here] Okay, full disclosure—I don’t have info on every single track here, but let’s imagine another standout called something delightfully vintage like “Oh, Me Hat!” Picture this: Ada and Steve trading lines faster than a couple of kids swapping marbles at recess. Her voice lilts; his booms. Together, they create a vibe that screams, “We’re having way too much fun for 1911!” If you close your eyes, you might picture them performing in front of a crowd of bowler-hatted gentlemen and ladies fanning themselves dramatically. It’s wholesome, chaotic, and utterly unforgettable. Why Does This Matter Now? Sure, Finnegans Flat isn’t exactly what you’d blast during your morning commute or spin at a club (unless that club has a time machine). But there’s something magical about listening to music from over a century ago. It reminds us how far we’ve come—and also how people back then weren’t so different. They laughed, loved, and made slightly awkward attempts at pop music just like us. As I sit here pondering this relic of early audio history, I’m struck by one thought: if Ada Jones and Steve Porter were alive today, they’d probably be TikTok stars. Or maybe podcasters. Either way, they’d still be killing it. So next time you’re feeling bogged down by autotune and synthetic beats, give Finnegans Flat a whirl. Who knows? You might find yourself laughing at Finnegan’s antics—or wondering why anyone thought naming a song after his apartment was a good idea.

British-born popular mezzo-soprano and comedienne (born June 1873, Oldham, Lancashire, United Kingdom died May 22, 1922, Rocky Mount, NC, United States) One of the leading female singers during the acoustic recording era, Jones prolifically recorded from 1893 to 1922. Born in Lancashire, England, she moved with her family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1879, at the age of six. Later they lived in Newark, New Jersey, not far from Edison's recording studio in West Orange, New Jersey, where she made her first recordings in 1893. In 1904, she began recording for and as well. Jones was an unusually versatile singer who performed everything from sentimental ballads to popular hits of the day. One of her specialities were comic songs in which she imitated German, Irish, and African American women just as well as big city salesgirls, country damsels, grandmothers, or New York newsboys.
