Albireon - A Mirror For Ashen Ghosts Part One

Review by Bud Summers

A Mirror For Ashen Ghosts Part One by Albireon: A Dark, Twisted Journey Through Folk and Metal Let’s cut the crap. This album isn’t for everyone. If you’re into shiny pop hooks or predictable choruses, turn back now. A Mirror For Ashen Ghosts Part One is a raw, unfiltered punch to the gut—a collision of neofolk, doom metal, industrial grit, and blackened chaos that feels like wandering through an ancient forest at midnight with no flashlight. Released in 2018 by Italian mastermind Davide Borghi under Toten Schwan and Torredei Records, this thing doesn’t just sit in your playlist; it haunts you. First off, let’s talk about “Beyond The Dreaming Forest.” Holy hell, what a track. It starts slow—too slow, almost teasing you—but then BAM! The guitars kick in like a chainsaw ripping through bone. Davide’s vocals are raspy, desperate, like he’s screaming from some forgotten grave deep in those woods on the cover (shoutout to Massimo Romagnoli for nailing that eerie artwork). There’s something hypnotic about how the acoustic guitar weaves between the heavier riffs, creating this weird balance of beauty and brutality. You don’t listen to this song—you survive it. And when it ends? You’ll want to hit replay just to figure out what the hell just happened. Then there’s “Above Black Shores,” which hits different but still crushes hard. This one leans more into the industrial side, with Stefano Romagnoli’s loops adding layers of unease beneath Egidio Lista’s basslines. It’s grimy, mechanical, yet somehow organic as fuck. The keyboards from Carlo Baja Guarienti add these haunting melodies that feel like they’re creeping up behind you. By the time the track builds to its climax, you’re either headbanging or questioning every life choice that led you here. Either way, it sticks with you. What makes this album stand out isn’t just the music—it’s the atmosphere. Every track feels like a chapter in some cursed storybook, pulling you deeper into Albireon’s twisted world. Tracks like “My Grave In The Heart Of The Woods” and “Through Branches Of Grim Beauty” keep the tension high, while “For A Last Day Of Swirling Leaves” throws in enough melancholy to make even the toughest metalhead shed a tear. But here’s the kicker: despite all the darkness, there’s a strange sense of hope buried in the noise. Maybe it’s the folk elements peeking through the shadows, or maybe it’s just Davide Borghi’s refusal to give up, even when the music gets suffocating. Whatever it is, it works. So yeah, A Mirror For Ashen Ghosts Part One ain’t perfect. Some parts drag, others hit so hard they leave bruises. But damn if it doesn’t feel alive in a way most albums don’t. Listening to it feels less like entertainment and more like surviving a storm. And honestly? That’s exactly why I can’t stop coming back to it. Final thought: If trees could scream, this is probably what it’d sound like.

Notes

  • “I belong in the woods and have always done so”
  • (Dead 08.04.1991)
  • “A Mirror For Ashen Ghosts”is dedicated to Dead/Per Yngwe Ohlin (16.01.1969-08.04.1991).
  • This is music for all the mentally or physically abused, raped or bullied people who were able to accept and cherish their wounds and go ahead with their lives. This record is a home as well for all those broken ones who decided instead to follow the path of loneliness through branches of grim beauty and passed away beyond the dreaming forest, lying forever like stars in winter rapture for a last day of swirling snow in a mossy lake of ghosts. They are now ashen spirits in misty fields and found their graves in the heart of woods, before finally ascending above black shores to breathe the purest air of a better otherworldly place. We wish them peace and we respect their final choice : may these songs provide a mirror to connect our world with their lost forgotten kingdom.
  • The song “Through Branches Of Grim Beauty” is dedicated to David Gold of Woods Of Ypres (19.06.1980-21.12.2011).
