Album Review: Min Vän Spiken / Bella Musica by Alice Babs Alice Babs’ 1953 release Min Vän "Spiken" and Bella Musica is a curious little gem from Sweden’s jazz-pop scene. Released under the Metronome label, this record feels like a time capsule, capturing a moment when vocal music was experimenting with personality and playfulness. It might not be a household name today, but its charm sneaks up on you if you give it half a chance. The opening track, Min Vän "Spiken", immediately grabs attention—not because it’s flashy or overproduced, but because of its warmth. Alice Babs' voice has this unassuming sweetness that draws you in. The melody feels simple, almost conversational, as though she’s sharing a story just for you. You can’t help but picture her leaning into the mic, giving life to lyrics about friendship and connection. It’s one of those songs that sticks in your head—not because it demands attention, but because it feels genuine. Then there’s Bella Musica. This track takes things up a notch with its jazzy undertones and playful rhythm. It’s impossible not to tap your foot along to it. Babs’ delivery here is smoother, more confident, almost like she’s inviting you to dance without saying a word. There’s something about the way her voice dances around the instrumentation—it’s polished yet raw, warm yet sharp. If I had to pick a favorite, this would be it. What strikes me most about these tracks—and the album as a whole—is how they reflect their time without feeling stuck in it. Sure, it’s rooted in the mid-20th century Swedish jazz-pop tradition, but there’s an authenticity to the music that transcends decades. Listening to it now, I find myself wondering what Alice Babs would think of today’s auto-tuned pop charts. Would she laugh? Or maybe shrug and say, “Well, at least we had fun back then.” In conclusion, Min Vän "Spiken" and Bella Musica isn’t going to blow anyone away with groundbreaking innovation, but it doesn’t need to. Its strength lies in its simplicity and sincerity. And honestly? Sometimes that’s all you really want—a reminder that music can just be good company.
