Anka - Cocoon Time

Cocoon Time by Anka: A Sonic Journey That Sticks With You Alright, let’s talk about Cocoon Time, the 2006 gem from Anka, released under I-Rain Records in the UK. If you’re into genres like rock, pop, and electronic—or styles ranging from ambient to post-punk—you’ll find something here that grabs your attention. Produced by Anka Wolbert herself (with Pieter Nooten co-producing), this album feels personal yet expansive, like she poured her soul into every track while leaving room for listeners to wander around in it. The record kicks off strong with “Don’t Weigh Me Down,” which is probably one of those songs you can’t help but remember. It starts with this moody guitar riff that just pulls you in—like, whoa, where am I going? The lyrics are raw and relatable, talking about breaking free from emotional baggage. And when the chorus hits, it’s catchy enough to stick in your head for days. Honestly, if you’ve ever felt bogged down by life or relationships, this song gets it. There’s a kind of cathartic release in its energy, blending alternative rock vibes with hints of pop sensibility. Love it. Another standout track has to be “Inside the Bubble.” This one leans more toward the electronic side, with these lush, dreamy layers that feel like floating through clouds. The production is super smooth, almost hypnotic, and Anka’s vocals have this ethereal quality that fits perfectly. What makes it memorable isn’t just how good it sounds—it’s also the vibe. Listening to it feels like stepping into another world, far away from whatever chaos might be happening outside. Like, yeah, we all need an escape sometimes, right? One thing I noticed about Cocoon Time is how cohesive it feels despite mixing so many styles. Tracks like “Crystal Clear” bring a shimmering pop-rock edge, while others like “Deep Dive” dive deep into darker, moodier territory. Even though there are moments that lean heavily into post-punk grit or ambient introspection, everything flows together seamlessly. You can tell Anka had a clear vision for this album, and working with Pieter Nooten as co-producer definitely paid off. Now, here’s the random thought I couldn’t shake after listening: Why isn’t this album bigger? Seriously, it came out in 2006—a time when indie and alt-rock were blowing up—but somehow Cocoon Time feels like a hidden treasure. Maybe it was ahead of its time? Or maybe it’s better this way, letting fans discover it on their own terms. Either way, it’s worth adding to your playlist if you haven’t already. So yeah, give Cocoon Time a spin. Whether you’re vibing to the rebellious energy of “Don’t Weigh Me Down” or getting lost in the otherworldly haze of “Inside the Bubble,” this album will leave a mark. And hey, who knows? Maybe it’ll become your new favorite thing you didn’t know you needed.

Agreed, although there are some newer songs that are good by some of Xymox's newer material. Anka's solo stuff is refreshingly different. I'm curious to hear this album. Nice to know she is still creating songs.

Sad that Clan Of Xymox has become a shadow of it's former self. She and Pieter really brought a certain spirit to the band back in the day.

How can it be that I am only discovering this now, ten years later? This is beautiful. I always felt that Wolbert has one of the most under-appreciated voices ever recorded.
