Review by Adrien Corcilius

No Hair Sam Lovin’ Valentine: A Wild Ride Through 1965’s Pop-Rock Circus Alright, let’s get this straight—April Stevens’ No Hair Sam Lovin’ Valentine isn’t your run-of-the-mill pop-rock album. Released in ’65 under ATCO Records, it’s got that weird mix of parody vibes and straight-up sass that’ll either make you laugh or scratch your head. Produced and arranged by Nino Tempo (yeah, the same dude who gave us some legit bangers), this record doesn’t take itself too seriously—and honestly? That’s its charm. First up, “No Hair Sam.” Man, this track slaps in the most bizarre way possible. It’s like someone took a goofy nursery rhyme and shoved it into a blender with rock ‘n roll grit. The lyrics are absurd—like, borderline ridiculous—but damn if they don’t stick in your brain. You’ll find yourself humming about bald guys and questionable life choices hours later. It’s catchy as hell, but not in a sugary sweet way. More like… an earworm you didn’t ask for but kinda enjoy anyway. Props to April for leaning into the chaos without flinching. Then there’s “Lovin’ Valentine,” which flips the script entirely. This one leans heavier on the pop side, dripping with saccharine romance and over-the-top drama. But here’s the kicker—it’s so exaggerated that you can’t help but smirk. Is it supposed to be ironic? Parody gold? Or just plain corny? Who cares! It’s fun, unapologetically cheesy, and gives off major mid-60s vibes. If you’re into vintage sounds with a twist of humor, this track will hit different. What makes this album stand out is how unbothered it feels. In a decade where everyone was trying to be cool or groundbreaking, April Stevens decided to zig while others zagged. Sure, it might not age well for some listeners, but that’s part of its appeal. It’s raw, messy, and completely bonkers—and sometimes, that’s exactly what music needs to be. So yeah, No Hair Sam Lovin’ Valentine won’t win any Grammys, but it doesn’t need to. It’s a time capsule of weirdness from a time when artists still had room to experiment. And hey, maybe we could all use a little more “No Hair Sam” energy these days. Now excuse me while I go figure out why my cat keeps staring at me while I listen to this thing… Creepy.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *No Hair Sam Lovin' Valentine* by April Stevens is a quirky piece of music history. Released in 1965, it blends pop and rock with a parody twist. What makes it stand out? It was produced and arranged by Nino Tempo, who was a big name in the music scene back then. The album includes just two tracks—"No Hair Sam" and "Lovin' Valentine"—making it more of a fun, lighthearted project than a full-length record. It’s like a little musical joke frozen in time!

Never heard this until I got the greatest hits. Quite innovative. Nino went very Phil Spector with the production. Wish it had been a hit.

This was a Top 10 hit in Singapore. April was about 36 when she recorded this and still the hottest babe in the room.

So how did you get ahold of this? I've had the 3-track sub-master for 30 years rescued out of a Hollywood recording studio. The only guys I gave it to were on the BSNPubs sync board when they used to have a stage-tape sync section.

And why did you mix it to mono for? See the Comment below for what would have been done on the original mono White Whale single. if you want the 3-track sub-master this came from A clean and B in stereo PM me for it.

Great song. What are the lyrics? I need them for a novel but I'm Spanish and I can't understand a pair of sentences. Thanks.
